I proposed at City Gate – with a little help from my friends
Video: Mark Zammit Cordina
Cristina Farrugia, a 24-year-old teacher, wasn’t expecting an orchestrated marriage proposal when she walked into Valletta this morning – but that is just what she got.
As soon as she and her boyfriend Andrew Luke Vella, 25, approached, their friends, who waiting in the arcades, came out running to the middle of the road carrying placards spelling out “Cri... will you marry me? :+)”
Andrew immediately got down on one knee, took out an engagement ring and offered it to Cristina, who accepted.
Speaking to timesofmalta.com, a visibly elated Andrew said that even though they had already planned to marry – with the date set for next March, he had never officially proposed.
“Since I’d never properly proposed, I thought she deserved to have something special, so I decided to surprise her with this,” he said.
And from the looks of it, it seems he did.

I have had the opportunity to work with Andrew Luke for some months and consider myself lucky to have met him. He is an inspiration. Through him I also met Christina who is also a very nice person. You deserve each other. Good luck

@Simon Swartz
sorry ta but at the times of our parents, those were days where women used to stay in the house, had no money of their own, and were totally dependent on their husbands, there was also the mentality in those days, that no matter how one is treated in the marriage, one stays together for the sake of the children. nowadays the individuals have more self esteem and do not accept everything in marriage

First of all good creative idea but there was no need of the media whoever called/had the initiative.
Secondly no one can say that these two people are too young at 24 years to marry each other..maybe some should remember when their parents used to marry at 20years and supposedly they are still together happily married.
Good Luck!

Thanks to all the well wishers, I appreciated the nice comments.
My biggest THANKS goes to our friends - THANK YOU GUYS! Without your help, my original idea would have surely not become such a nice reality for Cri. I really appreciate the embarrassment you had to put up with! You made our day and it is truly unforgettable!
Merry Christmas to all :+)

I agree with you 100%. some couples are marrying when they are very young, have never lived out of the house or with their partner. bil-malti hemm saying "bniedem trid torqod u tqum mieghu biex tkun taf x'inhu". many couples marry without really knowing themselves well and the partner well and this is a recipe for disaster. Especially in Malta, it is more socially acceptable to marry rather than "tpoggi" and this might lead to marriage because of pressure from the families to do everything "the right way" (this pressure may be subtle at times and not necessarily spoken out). IN Europe over 40% of marriages end up in divorce, so one should really go into marriage with a big sense of responsibility. I doubt if at the age of 24,25 I had that maturity, or anyone has. Also chemical love blinds in the first months and years, the problems come out much later, so one has to really take time to get to know the partner well

''......wish them well instead of criticising. Can't you 'show off ' on one of the most meaningful days of your life maybe?''
Not publicly, that's why it's called showing off in the first place, duhhh
''...... guess u just don't know the meaning behind these kinds of moments''
Perhaps.....or maybe little things please little minds.....:))))

Repeat those magical words Andrew Luke and tell her every day how beautiful she is....she likes it too !

24 years old ... I don't want to sound like a cynic but I don't know ... my lousy opinion is that couple should live together at least till they are close to 30.
Marriage changes everything for both ...
However best of luck to the couple ...

@ Adrian Camilleri - So cheeky of you, wish them well instead of criticising. Can't you 'show off ' on one of the most meaningful days of your life maybe? so many people show off everyday.... guess u just don't know the meaning behind these kinds of moments.
Anyways.. happy Christmas to all of you and Congrats again to this new couple :)

Congrats to Andrew Luke & Cri.
Speaking on behalf of the people involved (around 20 people) we were glad we made this possible. Even though we felt a bit embarrased at first, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and it was not to be missed.
God Bless you both!
