Pope Benedict XVI has written to the President of Malta, George Abela informing him that he has accepted his invitation to visit the island next April 17-18.

In a letter from the office of the Holy See dated November 30 but which was released by the Department of Information yesterday, the Pontiff expressed his affection for the people of Malta.

The Pope said he looked forward to joining the people as they mark the anniversary of St Paul's arrival on the island in 60 AD.

"The solemn recollection of that momentous occasion will surely afford the Maltese people and indeed the whole Catholic world, a most fruitful opportunity to reflect upon and to deepen their Christian faith," Pope Benedict wrote.
