EasyJet planning Rome-Malta service
Low-cost airline EasyJet is planning to introduce a daily Rome-Malta service on March 12, competing head-on with Air Malta and Alitalia, informed sources said.
The service has not been officially announced yet, but the route appears on the EasyJet website.
EasyJet will be flying to Malta from Fiumicino, Rome's main airport.
It is understood that the airline has not applied for assistance to operate the route, as is the case for many other low cost operations.
A few weeks ago EasyJet announced in would start a Milan-Malta service on March 30, with three weekly flights.
A Liverpool-Malta service starts on June 13.
All EasyJet aircraft will start being serviced in Malta as from next year thanks to the setting up in Malta of the aircraft maintenance facility of SR Technics.

Everyone should keep in mind that if it were not for these low cost carriers, air malta's prices would be much higher.
Thumbs up for competition. Everyone can make his choice on which airline to fly with.

@ Vanessa Grech.
You have no choice but to plan your journey early with Easyjet, i cant pretty much guarantee that no cheap seat will be available close to a date anyone wishes to travel. Besides having kids pretty much guarantees you can plan ahead since the school holidays are known well in advance. Also keep in mind the time you will need to be at the airport 440am.
@ Karen Farrugia remember that a lot of transport companies charge more to get you to the airport at odd hours so unless you stay close to FCO or can get a lift the saving on the flight probably goes on transport.
Anyhow i think we all agree that the more options the traveller has the better for all, i'm all for Low cost airlines as long as they play in the same ball park as the other carriers.

The more choice we have the better. Regarding cancellation I would not be so sure with the traditional airlines. I am in litigation with Alitalia who agreed to reinburse me 550 Euros in cancellation compensation. Guess what.... they never paid up though the case is almost a year old! So the more choice we have the better. And low cost does not necessarily always mean low quality service too. Alitalia service was anything BUT a good service!

MTA - Easyjet - Ryanair -
Noting all the snow storms abroad,
no better time to advertise destination Malta
and
Malta's weather situation to most Europeans...
sure that for some it would be cheaper weathering current storms locally than back home...

C. Mallia has a point.
Malta - Brussels is a very interesting route for easyjet and the likes. It's not difficult to compete with Airmalta's prices on this route. Passengers whose flights are paid from their own pockets will surely opt for the competition.

@Karen Farrugia
You are forgetting the luggage fees of EUR22 per piece. And the more convenient Air Malta timing of the flight from Rome.

@JA Farrugia; When you have kids you can't plan your holiday from 3 or 6 months earlier. Then, Airmalta offers stop during the holiday period, example from 18th December to 6th January offers are not valid. I'm sorry for Airmalta but I'll choose the airline that has the more competitive price.

@JAFarrugia: Try easyjet search 22-29March 2010 and compare with airmalta. Result: easyjet €81 (if you pay by visa electron) and airmalta €137.45. If you travel with a partner and 2 kids it's a good €225 euro saved...so yes this is definitely a good news!

For everyone's information, during the snowstrorm that engulfed Europe, Easyjet was the first one to duck out and cancelled ALL flights to and from Amsterdam and other destinations. It was followed by 8 others. Air Malta was one of the very few that picked up the stranded passengers albeit with an obvious expected weather delay. Now everyone knows that when a low cost carrier cancels flights due to weather, the passengers ARE NOT ELIGIBLE TO A REFUND! On more than one occasion do these low cost carriers cancel flights when they have low capacity and the city has some weather. NO REFUNDS!

This would be a very important breakthrough with convenient departure times to connect to other various destinations from a very important hub!

Welcome to Easy Jet and welcome to flight cancellations. Everyone knows the weather situation around most european airports. See how many flights these low cost carriers cancelled, and try to compare with Airmalta. Well done Airmalta, even if you had to do unplanned disruptions to your operations, but you managed to honour your promise with your loyal customers.

Good news for some, but the flight time from Rome is 7 am on most days - if you have to get to the airport at 5.30 that means a very early start from the city. The times to Rome are very good though.

Someones got to give, no way can 3 carriers operate a route like FCO.
I'm all for competition but i would have preffered if they chose a destination that wasnt covered.
@Vanessa Grech, why cant you come more often now ?? there's 17 flights a week at the moment, book in advance and you can get here for €105 return, approx Lm45.

The most important is that Prices will go down and not the service.
Hope that this competition will be for the benefit for us travelers.

Great News. I am sure Air Malta can take the competition on. Easyjet, think of another sorely needed route, Malta-Brussels Charleroi. You will get many Maltese travelling frequently from Brussels and Luxembourg.
