Updated: Police seek motive for parcel bomb attack
Experts sifting through the evidence after yesterday's explosion.
Adds details:
Philip Cini, the Qormi man injured in a parcel bomb explosion yesterday afternoon, is now stable but his condition remains serious, hospital sources said today. The police still have to speak to him.
Mr Cini suffered severe injuries to both his hands and his torso in an explosion as he opened a package left at his doorstep in St Edward Street. He was fortunately given quick medical attention as an ambulance happened to be driving along the street soon after the blast.
His wife and seven-year-old grandson, who were also in the house, were not injured.
The police are meanwhile still trying to establish the motive for the attack. His relatives were questioned for several hours yesterday.
Informed sources said it was almost certain that the package was not delivered by a postal service but had been placed there by someone. The package had 'To Philip from Doris' written on it. Mr Cini's wife is also called Doris.
AFM explosives experts are examining the remains of the package to establish the nature of the bomb, however informed sources said the explosive is thought not to have been of the type used in fireworks and quarries.
The attack was the most serious since a letter bomb killed Karin Grech, 15, in 1977.
Two weeks ago the police were called to investigate a suspected parcel bomb in Qormi but it turned out to be a hoax.

The Police alone can never solve incidents, stop seeing CSI and other related films, to solve crimes there are three steps.
1) The Police Intelligence.
2) The scene of Crime.
3) The information from the public.
So anyone knows something in any incident please dont shut up or you be an accomplice to the crime. This incident could have been you involved.....

We cannot engage ourselves in the deceit that this kind of terror has more than one interpretion. We cannot say also, after the perpetrator is caught that he was very ill when he was young, he stuttered, he was extremely shy, he fell frequently fom his mother's hand when he was a six month old baby hitting his head everytime, his father was a drug addict.
This kind of terror should not be interpreted it should be eradicated.

Exercise caution people! Do not open unexpected packages left on your doorstep. Better safe than sorry.

J.S. & S.S, Prosit hafna, I pray God that those who have the slightest information should contact the police.
This applies also for information on the person/s who planted the explosive device on the scuttled ship near Filfla Island. I feel certain that there must be someone who knows about this mode of illegal fishing.

I fully agree with you Jimi, these are very grave incidents and require the general public for help to capture the perpatrators of these horrendous crimes. These people have no idea what distress they cause to family and friends of victims - not just to the victim. If anybody reading this article knows anything about these crimes please contact the police any small detail can help sole these crimes.

Let us remember, dear citizens of Malta, that we have people around us that are causing much pain to family members and friends. This the second attack which occured within a few weeks from each other, the other being the acid attack in Lija. Whoever saw something, PLEASE do report to the police!!!
