I have just received the sad news from my mother that Edwin Busuttil has passed away. I am deeply saddened by such news. His death will leave a big void not only among his family members but also among his large circle of friends and colleagues.

I have known Prof. Busuttil ever since I was a law student at the University of Malta as he was my professor in constitutional and international law. I thank him for the interest he took in me and in all my fellow colleagues. He was always the perfect lecturer, so punctual, so well prepared and so interested in all of us and in all our achievements even after many years passed by. He was so eloquent in his speech, so hybrid in his choice of words, which made the lessons all so much more interesting. He made sure we were all following his learned lectures for he would include us all at one time or another in question time. He was so respectful to students.

It was my pleasure to be one of his students and, luckily, I even had the pleasure to be examined by him when I presented my thesis for the doctorate of law in the final year of my law course. He was certainly very thorough in his subject and to this very day I am grateful to him.

Prof. Busuttil also honoured our island when he worked for a number of years, arduously and in the most dedicated manner, in Strasbourg as commissioner within the framework of the European Court of Human Rights.

He was, above all, a family man, a true and loving father of three boys whom he was very proud of, a dedicated grandfather of four and a devoted husband to his wife Emma, whom he always wanted to have beside him.

No words can describe such a gentleman of great integrity and of strong religious convictions.

Malta has lost a true and faithful son. I, for one, have lost a true and loyal friend.

Dear God, grant him eternal rest.
