The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, which has its secretariat based in Malta, has been granted observer status by the UN General Assembly.

Foreign Affairs Minister Tonio Borg said the decision would further strengthen relations developed with the UN over the past months.

The decision meant the PAM was granted the right to occupy a seat in the General Assembly Hall and intervene in important debates. The PAM's Secretariat is located in Palazzo Spinola, St Julians, in line with the government's efforts to place the country at the centre of Mediterranean diplomacy.
