Ħamrun local council has been awarded the EU's Golden Star honour for the best project on an international level organised within the EU.

The award, the most prestigious in its category, forms part of the Citizens for Europe programme and is granted by the EU Commission to local and regional organisations in Europe for their commitment towards improving and developing social and cultural aspects of the community.

Ħamrun won through its town twinning with Carpineto Romano in Italy, back in March. The agreement between the two towns flourished in the activities held in May, with the first typical Italian Palio della Carriera festival held in Ħamrun.
