Trade unions back call for urgent tariffs debate
The Forum of trade unions, a grouping which includes the Malta Union of Teachers and the Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses, has backed calls for an urgent meeting of the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development to discuss the utility tariffs.
The Forum said the new rates, announced on Monday, were exaggerated and made no sense.
"The new high rates will cause job losses and price rises since businesses cannot absorb the new costs. This all means we will go through a long period of uncertainty and the recession will drag on for longer than expected," the trade unions said.
The Forum also insisted that it should be given a seat on the MCESD.

Keep up the good work Unions!
@ Maria curmi, J Busuttil, I Abela
If you want to criticise someone, go and check conditions of work of those employees where unions are not represented because the owners does not allow that right to the employee.
May be could change your mind .
Unions should urge Government to conduct a scientific study to calculate the basic consumption of each person. The result of the formula will reflect the reality of what is basic consumption and what is wasteful practice.
We should protect the basic consumption and penalise what is wasteful practices

Ok. Another enough is enough. This time not from GWU though. But didn't these unions say enough is enough, enough times ? Don't these unions have what it takes to get their message across ? If these unions, as they claim, are representing 3/4 of the population between them, and they all agree on the same issue, why not act tough in the interest of democracy. Bring the country to a standstill, order a general strike, and then maybe the government will wake up and realise that there are some unions in Malta. Is it possible that out of 400,000 citizens in Malta there is only ONE man (Franco) with the guts to stand up to Gonzi ?

Don't waste time with these unions. These unions know that the price of oil has gone up and apart from the subsidy for families who need help there is also a 10 million Euro subsidy to practically all fanilies in the form of an allowance,
