The way both the Labour and Nationalist parties address the hunting and trapping issue is depressing, to say the least. Through the Birds Directive, trapping and spring hunting is not allowed in the European Union, a fact presumably well known by all of us. Despite the facts, these parties keep choosing to twist them for political gain.
The PN chose to give the impression that nothing will change after Malta's accession to the EU.
Today, the same party is still trying to persuade hunters and trappers of the possibility of the EU providing some special concession, which thankfully does not exist.
On the other hand, the PL recently announced that it will be setting up a working group in conjunction with the hunting federation to examine existing hunting and trapping regulations in view of European law. There is nothing to examine but to adhere to the laws. This is nothing but a cheap attempt to win votes.
On the other hand, Alternattiva Demokratika - The Green Party always had a clear position. Abolishing spring hunting made and still makes sense, scientifically speaking.
What is needed is the beefing up of enforcement in order to ensure sustainability for the benefit of all, but most importantly for the benefit of those who prefer to see wildlife in the little remaining countryside.
