Xewkija primary recently became the second Gozitan school to be awarded the Eco-school Green Flag for its environmental credentials, the first one being Xagħra primary.

Eco-school is an international programme run in 47 countries by the Foundation for Environmental Education that focuses on environmental leadership. It seeks to offer pupils opportunities to participate actively in decisions that affect the environment both within their school premises as well as in their community.

Nature Trust (Malta) introduced the programme in six schools in Malta during the 2002-2003 academic year. To date, 100 schools, or 61 per cent of all local schools, are taking part in the programme.
