The Malta Tennis Federation (MTF) has been investing considerably in local coaches for the past few years as a means to improve the standard of the game.
This year, the MTF organised two intensive coaching courses. The aim was for Maltese coaches to obtain qualification at an international level, known as ITF Level One. The courses were conducted by MTF development officer Robert Tarpey while Hrvoje Zmajic represented ITF (Europe).
Each 70-hour course covered diverse coaching techniques as well as various aspects of the game. The initial part focused on mini-tennis, the first step to introduce kids to the sport.
The second part was dedicated to the teaching of basic tennis skills and covered all basic shots as well as activities and drills that one uses during a coaching session.
"The courses were very well received with a number of former top junior players now coaches, as well as established coaches attending," the MTF said in a statement.
The successful participants received their certificates from David Farrugia Sacco, the MTF president, during a presentation ceremony held last Monday.
Dr Farrugia Sacco remarked that the organisation of two ITF Level One coaching courses in one year represents a milestone for the MTF.
The MTF president added that the possibility of holding the more demanding and prestigious level 2 course was being seriously considered.
