Ryan Giggs has signed a one-year contract extension with Manchester United.

News that the 36-year-old winger, a one club man throughout his professional career, would be staying at Old Trafford for at least another season came as he found out he would be up against his old friend David Beckham in the last 16 of the Champions League after United were drawn against AC Milan.

Giggs's achievements were recognised by the wider sporting public last Sunday when he was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

"Ryan deserves a new contract and I am sure that he will play for another two years," said Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

"His form is fantastic at the moment and he is playing some of his best football."

Giggs is British football's most decorated player, with 11 Premier League titles and two European Cup triumphs forming part of his extensive collection of medals.

But the former Wales international, who has made over 800 appearances for United, is hungry for further honours.

"I am delighted that I have agreed one more year," Giggs said. "I am enjoying my football more than ever and I am looking forward to hopefully winning more trophies with Manchester United."
