Tariffs: Time of discussion without results is over - GWU
GWU General Secretary Tony Zarb said today that the union was backing a call by the Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association for an urgent MCESD meeting on the power tariffs but said the time for talks without results was over.
Speaking at a meeting for pensioners, Mr Zarb said the GWU and another 10 unions never stopped their fight against the high tariffs.
"The time for talks in now over. Now we need to meet to take action. We are not prepared to discuss without anything being done. It will be useless for the Prime Minister to continue with his sermons," Mr Zarb was quoted as saying in a GWU statement.
He insisted the people needed more money in their pockets, rather than bigger bills.
He also referred to the sewerage tax, which will be subsidised by the government, and said the government should declare whether this subsidy would be permanent.
He also referred to the reform of primary healthcare and said the GWU would not accept the introduction of any form of payment for health services.

Those bills were recalled because Labour had found out that those responsible at EneMalta had not worked the bills correctly but were charging the people for their inefficiencies and incompetence. Since then the PN has been in government for 11 years and did absolutely nothing to remedy the inefficiencies and incompetence. Now not only do they want to charge exorbitant tariffs to make good for their inefficiency and incompetence by increasing the Tariffs when the price of oil has been going down, but they are also making an extension that uses HFO instead of diesel or gas which is going to cause more pollution apart from the controversy of changing the law to allow it because the company which won the tender could not even be considered had the law on emissions remained the same! How about the commission from our taxes Seychell? How about having to make changes costing many more millions in a few years time?

Had Toni Zarb not been Secretary of GWU in 1997, one would have expected all the Unions to support him, but Tony DID NOTHING when Dr.Sant EXPLOITED Energy/Water/Drainage tariffs, except from COMMISSIONING A STUDY BY AN ex-Sant's MINISTER
Adding insult to injury, Tony's Union did not support UHM when Sant's Fat Cats took UHM to court, but on the contrary HE let HIS papers to demonstrate their pleasures on the Court decision to fine UHM One MILLON LIRI, or 2.33 MILLION EURO.
This time round Tony is ignoring the FACT that apart from supporting arrond 30 thousand families, the Government will also be giving a rebate of 10 million Euro to over 90% of consumers, and is trying to destabilise the Goverment with the support of 10 left leaning Unions under the leadership of Bencini - whilst Salvinu Spiter and Alfred Buhagiar looks down surprised from Heaven on Bencini's effort to the destruction of the CMTU.
TONY's ONLY AIM is to topple the government to see MUSCAT'S's MLP TAKE POWER. The Voters know that JM has not committed his party To Reduce Energy Prices if elected, and TRUTH WILL PREVAIL ONCE MORE.
Happy Christmas TONY.

Toni Zarb can single handedly bring the country to a standstill. And yet some people don't even know his name, they refer to him as ta' Issa Daqshekk. He has been saying enough is enough since the stone age. Well dear Toni, we are in the digital age now and many people are taking your comments with a pinch of salt. Kif jghid il Malti, Kelb jimbah imma ma jigdimx. Stop talking and do something. Or else don't do anything and stop talking. Whichever it is just stop talking.

Ladies & Gentlemen ...please. Stop this childish bickering. I really love hearing and/or reading about Government SUBSIDISING this and that !! I would like to thank anybody in Government or in Parliament for that matter, who is putting his/her hands in his/her pockets and putting his/her own money where their mouth is. We, The Taxpayers, are handing our own money to the Government who, in turn, sounds his loud trumpet and has the cheek to use the word "subsidising". Management is all it takes - good management of our money and our affairs .

Incredible but true! Tony Zarb again fanning the flames hoping to put the government in bad light and doing his best to try and force a snap election in the hope that Labour comes to power. Then we won't have to pay our electricity bills as the GWU will foot the bill; there will be no inefficiencies at Enemalta as they will shed some of the thousands that were attached to it by Labour on the eve of the 1987 election. My goodness, this sharp increase in utility tariffs - in some cases as much as Eur0.5 a day - will definitely lead to starvation of the majority of the population, people will have to stop purchasing new cars and importing luxury cars, they will have to walk or cycle to work and there will be no more holidays abroad for half the population. People will start withdrawing their Eur5 billion savings in the banks to meet these exorbitant utility bills. Enough is enough! This is ridiculous my dear Tony. Why don't you get serious and suggest the installation of solar water heaters and photo voltaic cells on the roofstops of factories, hotels, schools, convents, apartments, houses and offices?.

Electricity is not being subsidized anymore and it should be so I totally agree. But then lower the taxes, increase the wages, get better efficiency and lower the cost of living. Where is the money recouped from the subsidies removal going? Is it being wasted? Is the new power station extension going to be a failure like the previous one?
Good management please.....

J Farrugia...Who exactly are you to tell any union what to do in the name of the people?
Your posts are always the same no matter what you're writing about...its the people this, and the people that....
Are you a Prime Minister in waiting? a Prime Minister in disguise? or perhaps...Lo and Behold...Malta's lost royalty?

Why is it that whenever you post here your reasoning is always different from everybody else's? Could it be the genes? Or the blinkers?

@ J Farrugia
Government continues penalizing basic energy consumption.Instead of increasing the surcharge on consumption indiscriminately, the government should ensure that wasteful practices, and not basic consumption, is penalized. The basic rate of energy must remain affordable for all those on low and middle wage income.

"Things" aren't free we pay taxes and national insurance and expect that whoever is in government administers efficiently. Why should we have to pay again for social benefits? Yes I and the vast majority do pretend and expect that we get these things for "free". Why should we have to fork out more money for the corporations inefficiency? If Mr / Ms Farrugia likes paying higher rates, that's his problem> Most of us don't and we want lump it this time. This isn't about politics but about efficiency. Lets hope all the social partners unite this time round.

Tony. You are on the right track. Please look out for the people that do not belong to the unions. Next question. To have the most efficient bus service. Hire legal or illegal immigrants to be the bus drivers. They need jobs. They will provide best service Malta ever had. Have a trial of my suggestion. Than draft them to the union.
Thank you

Tony sit still and let us enjoy our Christmas festivities. You have to face the truth. Gone is the time when everything comes free. Nothing is free not even your highly paid job. So stop you trumpeting and sabre rattling and put your ears to the ground and hear the people telling you: ENOUGH IS ENOUGH from your UNION.
