HSBC Bank Malta has been named Bank of the Year in Malta for 2009 by the prestigious Financial Times monthly publication The Banker in recognition for the best overall performance and achievements.

The Bracken Award, named after Lord Bracken, the founding editor of The Banker in 1926 and the chairman of the modern-day Financial Times from 1945 to 1958, was presented to HSBC Bank Malta's CEO Alan Richards at a ceremony in London organised by The Banker in association with the UK Government's Department of UK Trade and Investment.

Mr Richards said: "In spite of difficult trading conditions, HSBC Bank Malta has continued to deliver excellent results for its shareholders.

"HSBC's enduring commitment to liquidity, strong capital and a conservative approach to risk management has served the bank, its shareholders and customers well in these uncertain times. The bank remains in excellent shape and is well-positioned to support the local economy and future growth.

"We are open for business and we continue to be market leaders by offering innovative products, leveraging our unique international franchise and investing in the latest technology and systems.

"HSBC Bank Malta's results are testimony to the hard work and professionalism of our dedicated and able employees and I am delighted to accept the award on behalf of the HSBC team."

This has been an excellent year for HSBC Bank Malta which has also seen it win the Global Finance Best Bank in Malta category and World's Best Internet Banks. Global Custodian, a leading international magazine covering the international securities services business, has recently honoured HSBC Malta with an Award for Excellence.
