Refugees leave for the US
A group of 11 refugees from Somalia has left Malta to begin a new life in the United States. Since the US Embassy began its permanent refugee resettlement programme in May 2008, over 360 refugees have been resettled to the U.S.
US Ambassador Douglas Kmiec hosted a reception for the refugees last Friday. Speaking at the event, Ambassador Kmiec reiterated the U.S. Government's commitment to help ease the burden that migration has placed on Malta.
"America is a land of opportunity whose identity has been forged by generations of immigrants, and I am certain that each of you will find a bright future there as you become a part of our unique and diverse society. Nothing has made me more proud as Ambassador to Malta, then to help you on this journe," the Ambassador said.
The latest group of refugees will be resettled in cities across the United States. Once they arrive in the U.S., each refugee will be assigned a sponsor agency that provides initial services such as housing, food, and clothing, as well as referral to medical care, employment services, and other support during a transition period lasting up to two years in order to ensure integration and assimilation.

Let alone that the USA attacked Iraq without the United Nations resolution, and took the law with her own hands…….. So do you call this a great country and a democratic country..????? I certainly do not.
@ Andrew Cumbo As to your comments, I would like to inform your good self that most of the EU member states said that they are not willing to except the famous burden sharing for two reasons
1) They do not agree with the idea that there should be burden
Sharing, thus it is not the solution to the problem
2) By doing so, you are encourage more illegal immigrants to cross
To Europe.
So, do not expect help from inland Europe, this is our problem and we have to solve it on our own and the only solution to this problem is one send them all back from where they come from as they are slowly but surly invading our country and living on the tax payer and taking the jobs of the local people

@Stephen Vella
I regret to say that I do not agree with your comments, as America will show you a friends hand shake as long as you agree with the political agenda off hers, but once you start showing that you are not in line with the agenda or a political move that the USA wants, then they start looking at you in a different way.
Take Iraq for an example where once this country and in particular Saddam Husain was an ally to the USA , which one should note that with the help of the USA Iraq went to war with his neighboring country namely Iran for nine years.
But what did the previous President of America did???? Well, first and foremost he wanted to finish the job that his father had started, thus George Bush and the British Government of that time Tony Blair tried to give the impression that Iraq had nuclear weapons of mass destruction but the general public did not believe these two in the first place and yet till the present day no nuclear weapons were found.

And the E.U. Countries when are going to make a stride and take some as well? But I think that we are going keep on being promised with a helping hand on this issue, and none of these countries are going to stop all the chitchat and turn to real facts and figures like the U.S. Unless we are really going to take this matter seriously and show all the E.U. member states the difficulties Malta is running into because of these immigrants no action is going to be taken.
Let just remember that not only these 11 have departed to the U.S. this year. So we shall thank the U.S. and most of all Mr. Douglas Kmiec.

Quite right Mr Sammut. The U.S is a vast country. They pay people to live in Alaska. What is 11 more people. A drop in the ocean. Malta cannot accept any more. Every one of them has to be repartriated. If people feel any different they should up sticks and go to Africa and do voluntary work. We don not want a multicultural society. It does not work. I will give my vote to whoever promises to rid us of illegal immigrants.

When will you people realize that what the USA is doing by taking some illegal immigrants from our island, the USA will expect something in return? Thus the USA already expects Malta to help in Afghanistan..........this is just the beginning and time will prove me right.
Time after time I had said that this is not the solution to the problem and expect that the rest of the EU member states to help MALTA by the famous idea of burden sharing, all this is just encourage more influx of illegal immigrants to come and try their luck at the cost of the tax payer of the respective country.
Yes the US ambassador namely Douglas Kmiec is right to say that the identity in the USA has been forgotten by generations........you do not need to go far, look at the USA president he is black and from Kenya.
As stated in his speech every thing will be provided for them, but at what cost? AH, I see, at the cost of the USA citizen namely the tax payers, and I' sure that the USA citizen will not approve of your program Mr. Ambassador.

This is a clear example of the US putting its money where itys mouth is. The US promised to take a number of immigrants and it is doing so. I agree with some contibutors who say that this may encourage other illegals to seek Malta. This has to be prevented by stricter controls and by the EU emulating the US in keeping its word. The EU still has to set up adequate structures that will prevent illegals from entering Malta. At the same time, those coloniising nations that turned Africa into a desert should now invest in African coiuntries and create jobs for those who, if hungry, will risk everything, and that includes their own lives, to seek a better existence in Europe. For the moment, it's Thankyou US for alleviating Malta's most serious problem. Keep it up

The less illegal immigrants we have in Malta the better, so the departure of these Somalis is good for Malta. However all this publicity is bad for us because more illegal immigrants will come in the hope of using us as a stepping stone to the US.

Maybe if Malta answers to President Obama call to help farmers in Afghanistan. The US will take more refugees from Malta.

A big Thank You to the people of the United States of America. May I wish these people good luck and all the best in their new settlement their.
The United States of America is indeed a land of hope. Let us also remember all the Maltese people that went there when times in Malta where hard too.
With my respect.

@ Joe Cordina
If other countries follow the US example, we would be over-run in no time at all.
Taking 11 is but a token gesture to shut mouths. We have some 11,000 roaming the streets, most of whose identity we do not even know. It would be better if Frontex's advice is heeded and no publicity given to these perfunctory re-settlements because it only serves to encourage thousands more to make the hazardous trip endangering their lives.
