HSBC hero donates reward to Community Chest Fund
Patrick Gauci, an HSBC employee who has been awarded the title of Local Hero by the HSBC Group for having detected and stopped a fraud transaction from taking place, has donated his monetary reward of US$5,000 to the Malta Community Chest Fund.
On receiving the donation as Vice-Chairperson of the Malta Community Chest Fund, Mrs Margaret Abela commended Mr Gauci's integrity at his place of work and his noble gesture in handing his reward to the Fund for the benefit of children in dire need of medical assistance.

Anthea - HSBC already have a good name - do you? or are you one of those who's owed everything by the world? If what you say is correct, this generous person Patrick Gauci would have kept the money for himself !! Could it be he's following his company's example in helping those in need?

I could not agree more with Anthea Bezzina even tough i have no idea who she is as i personally worked for hsbc in swatar with UK clients , but she is right , having said that this has nothing to do with the donation, however for those who currently work with hsbc are not being recognised fairly for the job that they do, which by the way they are currently taking extra calls and work from departments & branches that closed down due to the recession, constantly working under stress and pressure and not being appriciated for it as due to the changes in finance staff are an extra cost , look at a buisness side of it , if they can save some money they would turn on the staff first reducing the promotions and bonuses like whats happeneing at the moment being thretened to be kicked out for not reaching impossible targets that by the way the bank and the managers are aware about but they cant do nothing as it is a banks decision that would benefit them, hey hope this would change soon as to benefit us as cust, staf and buisness itself

Incontrovertible evidence that there are people whose personal bitterness transcends any notion of human decency. I've no idea who Mr Gauci is, but the fact remains that he gave away €5000: how many of the people who sought to criticise him would have given this gesture even the slightest consideration? Disgusting, small-minded people, whose world revolves around their own pinched existence.

@ Danika Vella - "Good deed, but why must all donations be publicized?!"
I disagree with this notion that somehow donations which are publicly announced are somehow inferior to secret donations.
In my opinion, if you give a donation to a good cause, you should not be ashamed of doing it in public. This old fashioned idea that discretion in donations is more honourable, makes no sense to me - why hide good deeds with false modesty?

Danika, its a good thing that good deeds are publicized. Why do we always hear of violence, disasters and crimes. I am sure Patrick did not want to this to be publicized but it provides a sense of good feeling and hope for whoever is reading..

Whatever Patrick's intention the money donated will go to a valid cause "the community chest fund". It was a nice gesture.

HSBC would make a better name for itself if it took care of its staff. Their records in this respect are abysmal.

I think it is a good idea to publicize such donations because it influences others. Remember that we are continuously bombarded with bad news and that is very demoralizing. Good news starts to counterbalance that. I think it also encourages others to be generous.

Also hsbc does help the community not only in Malta but also worldwide, and it is a good example to everyone even other buisnesses, this is not a competition of who gives the most because the income is different as well as the buisness, but this is what makes us human, helping others who are in seriously need from that extra that we have, im glad to see that we still have some humanity in us left as money to make people selfish lets face it who's not human ......

I can guarantee you people that any bank as it is a buisness after all do care for their customers otherwise the buisness would close down without clients, I can say as an ex hsbc staff myself that part of our daily job was to ensure confidentiality and safety of our customers accounts, at the end of the day who wants to put their money in a place where it is not safe, i personally have had a fraud case of over 30,000 euroes that was prevented, its only a one instance im mentioning and these things do happen daily. I was not given any awards or anything for it but a thank you which was more than enough however ppl must be more cautious nowadays cause fraud is increasing due to internet usage and personal identity is being used fraudulently, very soon it will be common in Malta also hopefully we be more aware , and do not throw away any paperwork in the bin like personal details, home bills, telephone bills or even statments, do shred them before, that will avoid personal identity theft and also would save you a lot of money, lawyers , court, charges etc.

Nice little story extremely commendable for Mr Gauci to donate his reward, however do agree with Ms Vella and also wonder if HSBC are going to make it worthwhile for L’isritna appeal for the free publicity they got!
