The word paedophilia, in the English language, has been around for just over a hundred years. If ever there was a misnomer, this must rank as the misnomer of misnomers of the last century.

The origins of the word lie in the Greek roots meaning "loving children". The root "-philia" means a wholesome love for the giver as well as the receiver, as in Anglophile, Francophile.

What we have here is truly not wholesome. Perhaps unwholesome for both parties. Many medical conditions over the years, especially over the last two decades, have been renamed, the older term being considered as politically incorrect and thus done away with.

Isn't it time that this designation also be re-assessed?

"The Greeks have a word for it", it used to be said. I wonder what they say for "paedophilia" in the sense used by the non-Greek world. God forbid if it's... "paedophilia".

Does anyone know?
