Thousands gathered last weekend to watch the Bay Music Awards, a showcase for local talent which featured energetic performances by all the nominees.

Even rock bands had some sort of choreography, raising the bar for an event which year on year sees increasingly flamboyant stage displays.

Held at the Bay Arena on Saturday, the military-themed event, hosted by Bay DJs Nathan D and Captain Drew, awarded prizes in various categories.

The Best Newcomer award went to Red Electrick, who had dancers dressed as robots on stage during their performance, while Best Solo Artist and Best Single award winner Christabelle came on to sing Every Time I Bleed off a swing hanging from the ceiling.

Last year's best newcomers, Airport Impressions, went home with the Best Band award while local heavyweights DJ Ruby and Ira Losco won the Best Dance Tune or Remix category with What's the Matter With Your Cabrio? The new Bay Bands Trophy went to Beige for Feels Good.

The event also featured electric performances by Wintermoods and Tenishia, Salt, Skimmed, Scar, Muxu and Droned among others.

During the awards a double CD compilation with all the songs of nominees and performers was launched, with proceeds from the sale of the CDs going to Dar Sagra Familja.

The event will be broadcast on TVM on Saturday at 9.30 p.m. with a repeat on Christmas Day at 3 p.m.
