Baby Jesus stolen from crib, again
Baby Jesus has been stolen, again, from the roadside crib on Manwel Dimech Bridge. The same thing happened last year.
A spokesman for Environmental Landscape Consortium, which put up the crib, said that it was during a routine inspection on Sunday that the loss was noted.
The inspections started after last year's incidents when a Bambin in Floriana and a statue of Mary on Manwel Dimech Bridge disappeared a few days before Christmas. They were not recovered.

What a waste of time some of these comments are! So what if the statues are ugly, "minghand ta' lira" or how high or low the electricity tarrifs are? The real issue is that alot of people have no respect for what the nativity represents and taking the baby Jesus statue is an act of vandalism in it's most immature form. Like some of these comments....

The reason that baby Jesus is not there is that it is not yet Christmas and Jesus has not yet been born.
Could this be a miracle and not a theft?

Baby Jesus was not stolen, He decided to walk away and not be connected to the electricity so He saves us power on the eve of the introsuction of the more exhorbitant utility trariffs. Joseph and Mary should follow suit...actually Joseph has already switched himself off. Mary should go powersaving too.

@Joseph Aquilina. Indeed stealing is a sin, do you think that is why St Joseph was not taken away, and that it has nothing to do with the grotesque way he has been portrayed?
@Joe Xuereb. Sur Xuereb you are forgiven, but I am finding it very hard to forgive the rascal that took baby Jesus away.

Are you really ready to pay that little extra tax to get a picturesque statue placed on a central strip in a main road?? Who do you think are the main clients of ELC? and where do you think these clients get their funding to place these "hideous" statues on a central strip?
Anyway my point is simple to understand, even if two stick figures were placed instead of the questioned statues, the symbolism still stands, and despite the efforts to keep the spirit running, people are still criticizing the aesthetics instead of tackling a more grievous action, which needless to say is the title of the article...."Baby Jesus stolen from crib, again"
Joseph Aquilina

What I have read on here is how ugly the statues are, and who needs plastic figurines in their garden or in their living room? What has not been said is, that stealing is a sin. A commandment from God...Thou shalt not steal. This pertains to anything, ugly statues, plastic items, or big money. It pertains to anything that does not belong to you. So there. God help us.
francesca vincenti
Dec 16th 2009, 23:08
People should not be surprised by anyone walking off with a plastic statue! Its a national hobby to take anything one sees or finds outside their front door, the same way as everyone seems to think its okay to litter beyond the boundaries of their own property. I bet my money on the fact that someone is decorating his front porch or back garden with these backlit statues... the hilarious thing is that whoever the culprit is probably goes to mass every sunday, swears between mon-frid, over-charges customers for services rendered or goods sold as a profession and quite possibly goes against every one of the 10 commandments; one of which JUST happens to be Thou Shalt Not Steal...! Living La (Christian) Vida Loca?

@Joe Xuereb. The observation I made is factual and objective. There are plenty of crosses with Jesus nailed on to them all over Malta, and no one goes around stealing Jesus from the cross. To put it in other terms, if you have a garden gnome in your front yard, if it is cemented to the ground, there is a lower chance of the gnome being stolen than if it wasn’t.

Nice comment mr.briffa, and i can understand what you are saying, i too live in Gozo, its a wonderful little island and friendly locals, we ar orignally from Britain, and just like you we love the place, but on a more serious point if a bridge is linked between Malta and Gozo, then i shall have to say goodbye to the calypso island and look further afield for a more crime free and a safe country, now a days its hard to find such a place but there is always hope that a Bridge between the two islands will not be in the pipe line for along time to come yet. hopefyully.

@ J.Farrugia,
"You're both attacking the aesthetics of a couple of statues in a main road, which no one ever takes a close look at"
And why not, these so called statues are an assault on the senses by their hideous ugliness, even when glimpsed at just once from the passenger seat of a 1958 Ford Prefect going 30 mph.
Idolatry aside, a nation where its people are spoiled in seeing fine statue work by the likes Carlo Darmanin or Antonio Scortino, deserve much better than these plastic road side wonders that look like they were severely beaten with an ugly baton .
Symbolism with good aesthetics is better than symbolism with bad aesthetics, any way you want cut it.

SPOT ON J.Galea i second that 100%, Malta is not the Malta that i remember from the 60's, unfortunitly things on the main island ain't what they used to be, and i fear it will get much much worse.. reason too many foreigners roaming about free as a bird, and i am not being racialist, i am talking facts here, just read the Times of Malta the amount of foreigners and copy cat Maltese and some gozitans breaking the law. I thank my God i live in Gozo and NOT i repeat NOT in Malta, and i am not Gozitan, origannly from Malta returned back from Canada.

Thats the difference between Malta and Gozo, here in Gozo we can leave our car doors open all night, money left on the door step, keys in the lock no body steals as we say in the UK Nick anything, but in Malta boy thats a different story, can't trust anyone there, don't know how long this peaceful tranquil island of Gozo going to stay free from crime though...we are talking about nicking now ok incase some Maltese come up with something different, besides BETHLEHEM IN Ghajnsielem is for real with real people and not made of wax., baby Jesus himself would have reported the culprit.

Are these grotesque representations legless? 'Kneeling on stumps?
An hour old child walks. Foretaste of walking on water later on, maybe?
Shooting birds pollutes. Big time.
Thief may have thought Bambin contained low-energy bulb. Took it because Govt. failed to deliver these.
(electrical) shock value of the tableau. Atheists and secularists find this meaningless. To other religionists, this is downright offensive. So much for 'there is only one god, we can all pray together'. Dream on.
Mary and Joseph had a first tiff. Could not agree whose ugliness the child inherited. So they had him adopted by a desperate thief, a childless one (maybe a light-fingered barren lady? or a regretful sterilized guy? ).
Chaining/bolting down the efficies would ruin the effect. Unless the chains are taken as symbol of a deadly stranglehold that prevents people's progressive thinking with the price to pay being bigotry and out-of-touchness with the real world. Just a thought for these very 'tranquil times while we're noisily shooting or dozingly fishing.

If we must persist in idolatry (in clear defiance of what the Bible says). Then we could at least make an effort.

@C. Cachia
I think you are perfectly right. It is the symbolic presence of Baby Jesus that prompts someone to steal the plastic statue, not its monetary value.
If you read comments made here, some people think it is so funny and ludicrious to make a fuss about such a minor incident. I think it is the sign of a sick mind and we should all pray for him/her.
Jesus symbolises peace, love, and faith, being the spiritual threadline of hope to the desperate and the needy at a time when traditionally families get together to celebrate the feast of nativity.
Well, at least the 'lol' (i.e. Lots of Laughter) comments posted in this thread show the openess and permissivness associated with modern Christianity. I am not sure it would be tolerated by all other faiths.

Thanks.
Just 2 points on baby Jesus. This fuss is about a baby made of clay or whatever, but what about the 25 million real babies murdered every year in Europe? Are we OK hello.... The other point is, soon their will be no baby Jesus, mother, and father, as they will not be allowed anymore, as the cross.
Merry Christmas to all especially the antis.

The beauty of such figurines is a debate all on its own, My comment concerns more the actual theft of baby Jesus.
It is mind boggling to think that there are some very naïve people out there. The PLASTIC doll was not stolen for its value or ‘beauty’ but by someone who finds this religious symbol not in tune with his own religious beliefs.
To think that it is in someone’s garden or living room is ridiculous. It is more likely in the sea or in a field along side last year’s.
This will be one small action amongst many yet to come in the future.
I’m afraid to say that these actions are warning signs of what’s to come. God help us !
