Christmas proclaimed in city procession
At around six in the evening on Christmas Eve, our towns and villages are enlivened by the old tradition of the procession with Baby Jesus.
The idea of Saint George Preca in introducing this celebration way back in 1921 was to make people reflect on the mystery of Incarnation.
He did this in an innovative and simple way which proved to be very popular and has withstood so many years. Apart from Malta and Gozo, the procession has also become an attraction in a few localities abroad.
As in previous years this procession will also be held by the Society of Christian Doctrine as a national activity in Valletta on December 23 at 6 p.m.
It will proceed from Freedom Square to St George's Square, and it will be followed by a short programme including carols, poems and the Christmas Sermon by a young boy.
The public is invited to attend and participate.
May this joyful celebration help us, young and old, to continue proclaiming the true significance of Christmas.

Saint George Prega introduced this celebration because one of the founders of the Maltese Republic Manuel Dimech......stated 'Alla m'hux bambin'......for obvious reasons.......one of them being that bambin is derived from the Italian word 'Bambino".
However Dimech's statement disturbed the tranquillity of the moral guardians of the island....thus this tradition.
Also our Prime Minister out of habit used to use the word 'Bambin" when actually he was referring to God ......But now it seems that we are getting more mature.
