@ joanna farrugia: The Cabinet got €200, but the opposition did not criticize them on it either....but they criticize them on the water and electricity bills.. that after all if you pay attention to what your using..and introduce some energy saving bulbs.. solar water heater and switch off where you are not using...it s not as everyone else is telling...

@ paul grech the poverty is here and its shown whom or which party got more money.the middle class and the poor gave only a fraction of what you pn gave.by the way your gonzipn said thanks to you and all of us by raising us the water and elec bills plus drainage too.gonzipn always worked for the rich to get richer and nothing else.infact he and the cabinet got a raise for more than 200euros and we only got 6euros.ara ta dahk gej grazzi gonzi!!! keep in mind ppl are not stupid anymore and i hope they open their eyes soon

Well nobody got one cent from me. And thank God to my good sense. I'll be needing a lot of Euro next year if I do not want to end without water and electricity or charged interest on my bills.

Money spending is people's decision, so we cannot dictate others how they spend their money. Today our parties are like large companies so they need funding. From where? From those who support their party and are willing to support it financially or from the tax payer, irrelevant to whom you vote (if you vote!)???

To all below grumblers and whiners.
You are free writing nonsense because you all forgot that democracy works through organised political parties which have to be financed in one way or the other.
The parties get their money from their supporters and and if you do not contribute just shut up and is none of your business how the party spend the money. The information like a company is given to its share holders in this case they are the party delegates. Reading such senseless writing show lack of knowledge about the finances needed to run a political party or a political campaign when it comes. It is easy to write but pls before doing so get involved somehow to obtain some knowledge about what you write first. Malta abounds with armchair critics or armchair experts.

I find it hard to believe that such figures have been collected as I suspect that these same figures are more than inflated. As Mr. B Sant rightly said can the public have access to each and every contribution in detail with their telephone numbers, amounts etc. Furthermore can same public know how all this money is spent (from each political party) by some indipendent audit firm. All this information can then be posted on their websites. In other words the public has every right to see that such events are carried out in a most transparent manner.

Why do political parties need this kind of money(to get the message through)!!!To print more and more leaflets and to continue upgrading the headquarters ? What about all the people who went to work,and got told coldly to go home because the company is closing down?Parents with sick children?YMCA?Shelters for battered women?Childrens' homes?Stray animals cruelly dumped on the streets?No wonder it gets more and more expensive to live.Because people are giving out the message that they can afford to waste their money to the political parties.

@ Gianninu Saliba: The fact that the parties have to make such fund raising activities says it all about how 'wealthy' people are. Just because the very few fortunate donate does not mean that EVERY maltese citizen is donating. I am one of those majorities who don't donate as I am one of those who does not have money in the pocket. If you are one of the few who can do whatever you like then speak for yourself and quit being egoistic!

this is all a cover up- to hide from where real funds are emanating from.
It would be interesting if telephony companies would provide the general public how much each contributed to the respective party. then the residuals would be from committees etc.
The next comparison will be l_istrina - we will see at what level this would compare when considering the whole population would be contributing to the same kitty. On the basis of the sums collected i anticipate a 1.5 million euro sum at least.

Maybe half of this money could have been given to charity and to those really in need.... but no - political pique has to prevail over anybody else's needs.

collected - Euro620,000
population - 400,000
average Euro1.50 per person or 3 cents per week.

People are free to give their money to who they want - but the government should not be free to give money to the political parties from our taxes!

This does not mean people cannot give money to charity

It is so absurd when seeing such political party showing off to impress, you can tell from their faces. It would be even better if they help the people in need all year round. So pathetic that this has become like some kind of competition. The country should unite including the political parties and do the charity together if they really want to impress. Well done to all those who gave the little they had from their heart, whether it was through these tv stations or through any sort of charity collection.

I too am not convinced by the figures published. I was watching the charade and switching from One Tv to NET Tv when donations by the local political committees were being handed in to both party leaders. On average the amounts donated by PL committees were by far greater than those donated by the PN clubs, probably by three times as much. Bottom line: the PN collect double the amount collected by the PL. Surely there must have been some hefty contributions by the business community to the PN to reach the figure of €410,625. Or else it's all smoke and gas. Now let's see what these parties' contribution to L-istrina and the Dar tal-Providenza campaigns wil be.

Mr Borg I totally agree with you about the sum that was 125,000 euros and in 45 mins it became 350,000.

Making political accounts public is a must for this society and fortunately, PL has been already doing so in the General Conference every year.

This year I admired Dr.Muscat encouraging people not just to donate money to his party, but to go and contribute to "Paqpaq fl-Istrina" and other activities organised. He wants Malta to be united and for once leave the partisan ideas.

Actually the sum collected 45 minutes before was in the region of euro 217,000 and not 125,000 as you were mentioned. The euro 100,000 collected in those 45 minutes were not attributed to phone calls. Several party executives and regional party organizer handed the leader a number of cheques they collected from the various activities organised by the party clubs /sections.

I am sure you were not following the program at that stage.

That's a big big sum for political parties......hope that those who contributed will contibute more to the coming Istrina on 26th Dec.

What astounds me about these collection is how the sums gathered are announced on the tv stations of the respective parties.

At one time i was watching NetTv and the Prime Minister was asked about the target envisged to be collected. He passed the mic to PBO who said that his aim was to surpass the sum of €350,000. At that instance NETTV was showing as already collected €125,000. To my amazement after about 45mins i was on Net TV and to my amazement the sum shown was €325,000. I don't know how many phone calls the PN received in those 45mins to gather the sum of €175,000?

I think it's about time that all political parties involved are to make public all their accounts so that we people can have a GOOD idea of how money is collected and then spent.
