The new power and water tariffs, effective from next January 1, were announced this evening by the government.

The Infrastructure Ministry said the electricity tariffs for households were close to what they were in October last year but there are increases in the tariffs for garages, empty houses, summer houses and businesses. However industry would benefit from the energy fund announced in the Budget and from different day and night tariffs.

Furthermore, the energy benefit given in the Budget would ensure that 97 per cent of households would not pay more than they were for their consumption, the ministry said.

Water tariffs are going up for both residential and non-residential consumers.

There are no changes in meter tariffs.

The ministry stressed that the revision of the tariffs was brought about by the higher international oil price which would, next year, see Enemalta spending €35.5 million more to buy the same amount of oil as this year. This year the corporation lost €21.4m on oil purchases.

The new tariffs include a new sewerage tariffs, which is however incorporated in government subsidies and does not affect consumer bills.
