As Christmas approaches our thoughts turn to gifts. Although Christmas is primarily about giving, we can't help wondering what we will receive this year. Christmas gifts are a mine field, if you've received something that you really love; you will thank them for months to come. If, on the other hand, you receive something that just makes you shudder, you will remember for next year and be tempted to buy them something equally terrible.
If someone you know is constantly moaning that they need to lose weight or get fitter, do not take this as a hint as to what they want for Christmas. This time of year, with all its temptations, is not a period when anyone wants to be reminded of their short comings. You may think that that new book or DVD from their favourite celebrity, that tells them how they got their wonderful figure in just six weeks, will make a perfect gift. You couldn't be more wrong. They will see it as an insult, and that you are telling them they need to sort themselves out. However well meaning your gift is, stay well clear.
Never buy footwear as a Christmas gift. Your sister may have gone on and on about those boots with the 4 inch spiky heels, but she won't be so impressed with them when she instantly breaks out in blisters or twists her ankle trying to walk in them! You will be to blame for buying them for her! If you know someone who has dropped heavy hints about a new pair of shoes, go with them to try them on before you buy them. It won't be a surprise but at least they'll know that they fit and are comfortable, and will be very grateful that you've bought them what they want.
If you should buy your mother/husband/wife any kind of kitchen utensils or pots and pans, don't be surprised if they are bounced off your head! Who wants to receive things like this for Christmas? If you're watching TV and an advert comes on for this fantastic new food processor complete with 95 attachments, you may think it will make their life a lot easier. It may do, but it will make your life hell. You will constantly be reminded of it and they will tell anyone who will listen about the atrocious present you got them.
Make sure that you always remember what you received from others the year before. Just about the worst thing you can do at Christmas is to give someone the same gift back! Imagine the look on their face when they open the lovingly wrapped package, then see what it is! You may think you've done well by saving some money, but this could be one relationship that is never the same again. They will just think you are mean, and they will be absolutely right.
A general rule to remember is, that unless you hear the magic word "that's what I'd like for Christmas" avoid items like this completely.
