Two women die in separate accidents
Two women died and a man is in a critical condition after two traffic accidents yesterday evening.
A 54-year-old German woman, Silvia Kluge, died after being hit by a man driving a car on Għajnsielem's main road, police said. She was taken to Gozo hospital but died within minutes.
Shortly after, a horrific accident at St Paul's Bay at 9.15 p.m. left one woman dead.
Police sources said the driver of a Peugeot 407 being driven along the St Paul's bypass lost control of his vehicle, mounted the centre strip and crashed into a Chevrolet Matiz negotiating the Erba Mwieżeb roundabout.
An elderly woman in the Matiz, Patricia Mitchell, died on impact, while her husband in the same car was taken to hospital in a serious condition.
The Peugeot driver suffered slight injuries.
Civil Protection Department rescuers were called to the scene to extract the victims from the car. The roundabout was temporarily closed to traffic.
Two inquiries are underway and the police are investigating both accidents.
Yesterday's incidents bring the total number of road fatalities in Malta this year to 21 - the highest this decade, according to the European Traffic Police network. In 2008, 15 people died on the roads.

I have attended the funeral of Barry and Pat today, the people who died in this accident you all seem qualified to comment on?
Please remember them as innocent people who lost their lives, and lives that meant a lot to people who loved and cherished them,a couple who would never say a bad word aginst anyone, genuine and loving people, and a priviledge to have known.
As for the other driver he is a young man of 18,maybe stupid maybe it was a mechanical fault who knows? but on this night he never set out to kill two other people and Im sure he feels remorse beyond belief,I really hope lessons are learnt by him and that at some point he finds forgiveness for himself,I know Pat and Barry would have forgiven him
As much as I grieve for these two unique people who have died tragically,my heart goes out to this yound man,who I hope takes this opportunity to make life better for others and himself.

I'm not a young driver anymore since im going in my middle 30s now but surely i remember how I used to drive when I got my license. I agree that when you are younger you tend to nail the gas more but surely we can't accuse all young drivers. Surely I would propose that drivers between 18 and 25 would have the permission to drive only small cc engine cars (and preferably new since they are safer). For example not more than 1000cc and they should be insured ONLY on 3rd Party with high premiums. The cc would increase after the age of 25 gradually. It can be introduced the Canadian style too....that is, a new driver should be always accopanied by his parents or whoever he is living with, but still driving a small cc engine vehicle.

Perhaps you should try following the current affairs more closely before you even deign to reply. The guy responsable for the Bugibba accident - who, with the impact, drove the other car 15 METRES AWAY was just 18. The Zejtun incident, in which a lad, his girflfiend, and his child all died, was in his early twenties. Most of the accidents are caused by reckless young drivers and yes, I repeat , have them banned from our roads!

I'm a young driver, got my licence about 3 months ago, these last 3 months all my accidental possibilities were resulted from reckless elderly drivers both women and men. Maybe yes, youngsters do like to drive in speed, do you think that drivers over 25 do not drive in speed?
Another point, whats the use of the time driving? Do you think that people aged between 18-21 driving between 5am and 8pm cant have a fatal accident? Anytime, anywhere can happen an accident!
@ Kenneth Debono
Your right, its very dangerous as well, but as a motor sport fan, do we have places where to practice sport? NO! Believe, if we do have places where we can practice this sport, lot of speed accidents and streets used as a racetrack will decline!
And how about the streets? GOD!! Both wet and dry, the asphalt is slippery! Whose to blame? Young drivers!

I don't think age has anything to do with it! I'm 20 and I consider myself a good driver, it depends on the mentality of the person. I have experienced near crashes because of ignorant drivers and they are usually middle aged! Infact, I had an accident because of a midde aged man who decided he was going to come out of a one way street and come straight into me. I agree with Michelle, she's right that it hasn't got anything to do with the age, it depends on the person and his knowledge of the road! My heart breaks for the poor woman who died but also for the boy who killed her because he i going to have to live with it for the rest ofhis life!

Okay you guys are complaining about young drivers when the article doesnt even state what age the drivers are. Younger drivers require more practice,... but its not only the young drivers who drive wrecklessly its people of all ages. Even the only accident I have been in was caused by a woman WHO WAS MIDDLE AGED just to go onto the roundabout without even looking or giving way like she was supposed to causing me to collide with another man. Not only are people of all ages wreckless but elderly people who are half blind and suffer from problems that delay their reactions. So I suggest you stop picking on the young drivers so much because its most of the drivers irrespective of their age who drink and drive, drive wrecklessly and cause these accidents. So i think the majority of the country should be ashamed of themselves for the way they drive. Especially truck drivers, bus drivers(who hit me once and all he did was swear as if it was my fault and drove of instead of getting help) and taxi drivers. If you think I'm wrong then comment away!

The problem with the new road from Xemxija to St. Paul's Bay is that it is constantly used as a racetrack! No age matters, No time of day or night and no type of car or bike matters. You need to live nearby to see and hear the cars and bikes zooming at top speeds 24/7.

@B Maloret
Maybe bacause the DRIVERS who seem to be the ones at fault for today's fatal or near fatal incidents are mainly in that age group! Doh!
I wouldn;t go as far as that but I would say that no-one between 18 and 21 should be allowed to drive a car between 8pm and 5am and no one between 21 and 25 between 11pm and 5am. Furthermore, the second option should apply to all drivers within the first year of getting their licence irrespective of age.

Brian Maloret, neither victim was driving, the Ghajnsielem victim was crossing the road, in the case of the Xemxija accident, the victim was the front passenger of the OTHER car. Apparently the driver of the latter accident was a brand new driver, just turned 18. Yes, there is a case for either increasing the age of driving up to 25, or else banning the under 25's from driving in the dark hours. In both cases, both victims were very unlucky to be at the wrong place, at the wrong time.

How would increasing the age to 25 when people can start driving have saved the lives of these two women?; one was 54 and the other described as elderly.

Should the competent authorities increase the driving age from 18 to 25, the fatalities would be less than half. Its no use putting up speed cameras everywhere, when the real danger is emanating from young, reckless, speeding , irresponsable drivers.

The problem is that speed camera fines apparently are the same. If one is going 5 kms over limit and one is going 50 is the same fine. 5 kms over is not going to kill anyone but once someone accelerates to 20 and more kms/hr, then s/he is risking not only his or her life but, what's worse, the lives of others.
We don't want these drivers on our roads - OUR LIVES and that of our loved which are at stake and they should be punished severely by losing their licence for a long long time.
More spot checks should be performed especially at Christmas time and police and wardens should be equipped with a radar to nab irresponsible drivers. We must stop this senseless killing.

POLICE SHOULD PLACE PORTABLE SPEED CAMERAS. THIS IS THE FORTH SERIOUS ACCIENENT IN XEMXIJA IN THESE LAST 4 WEEKS (BETWEEN THIS ROUND ABOUT AND THE CHURCH).
