New endemic moth discovered in Malta

A new species of moth endemic to Malta has been discovered. The new moth, Stichobasis postmeridianus, is described in the second annual bulletin of the Entomological Society of Malta (ESM).

For the first time, there are reports of 50 organisms from the Maltese countryside in the bulletin, which contains peer-reviewed scientific papers by local and foreign entomologists, illustrated with colour plates and line drawings.

Among the subjects covered are control strategies for the red palm weevil, sandflies and their role in canine and human leishmaniasis, aphids on native trees in Malta, and bark beetles.Officially established in 1998, the ESM is a non-profit, scientific society involved with the study of Maltese and Mediterranean entomology and other arthropods found in our environment. Besides being distibuted locally the journal is also circulated in over 80 research centres in Europe and beyond.
