Ira Losco says she is not "holier than thou"
Video: Paul Spiteri Lucas
Singer Ira Losco answers some quick questions by Christian Peregin and says she would probably be willing to pose naked because she is “not holier than thou”.
She admits to having kissed a girl but does not remember whether she liked it or not. She also says she never took drugs.
Ms Losco, who has recently launched her first book, talks about her admiration of controversial artiste Lady Gaga, her loyalty to the Sliema football team and her love of the Maltese language.
The full interview will be published on the Sunday Times and uploaded onto timesofmalta.com tomorrow.

@ Christine Bright
You are so right! Some ppl have actually said that Ira Losco is a role model for our teenagers today.. which might be true..but I think parents have a much stronger impact on their kids than a singer. So, I think instead of pointing at Ira Losco's comments, I think they should check their own morals and lifestyles first.

Ira Your'e a focused person knowing what u are doing and confident one. If you wanna photo shot nude well ur confident to do that and better do it while your young as you will remember ur beauty when ur older. By the way keep up the good music.

This is very worrying...
Teenage kids today
1. Spend the week with mum and the weekend with dad (and their partners)
2. Have unprotected sex
3. Have kids
4. Drink and drive... and kill people
5. Steal money from passers by
I think they were really SHOCKED to read that Ira Losco MIGHT do nude photo session.
Yes, it is very worrying that most people are not in touch with reality today.

Ara vera malta ma tistax . . . . It's not that this girl did a porn film she just was honest in answering some questions!! This is the problem in malta and it's never going to change, once this girl just sang ok for eveyone cause it's ((normal)) but once she mentioned nudity which after all she didn't do it, and that kissed another girl, well now we don't clap anymore and we talk about religion and attack her badly!! this woman did nothing wrong at all so just let her be. If you want to mention god well God never judged and attacked people, Jesus came to bring love between us. Ira keep it up don't let these stupid comments let you down, I am a fan and we'll always be.

Imagine what a comment that YES I MIGHT POSE TOTALLY NAKED does to 10 year old boy/girl, who adores his/her Idol? Is this healthy? Let us think about kids toó. After all beauty is only lent to us, not something we had really achieved.

I'd like to clarify what some people below are insinuating. After managing Ira Losco for 6 years I can confidently say that very often her answer is 'You never know' This implies one cannot vouch for what could happen in the future. It's quite pretentious to think otherwise in my opinion but unfortunately some reactions below confirm that being 'hollier than thou' works better for us MALTESE. I think we prefer to live in a bubble thinking we're all saints . This can be perceived as hypocrisy and further constrains the freedom of expression ! Nonetheless we have been offered quite a number of opportunities to have Ms Losco pose naked and without hesitation we refused them for a number of reasons . In fact sex, religion and politics have always been and will remain to be- NO GOES. We'll stick to music thank you very much and all that goes with the industry including the creative process of image and the freedom of writing. This industry requires the artist to be subject to public criticism. We welcome this hands down. Of course whether we use that criticism constructively or disregard it is our prerogative.

OH MY GOD ! it's not like Ira Losco said she's doing porn or posing nude but simply answered a question that she would probably consider a nude pic in the future because she cannot foresee what's around the corner. It doesn't mean she will. I just bought her book and there are 3 pics which are very tastefully shot and posed. There are no private parts showing and its nothing less what my children see on MTV . Actually if anything i think Ira Losco is very careful not to go there. All her images are definitely certified as U as is her DVD which was in the cinema 2 years ago.

@ Charles Xuereb - I mentioned Holland to answer Mr.Oldenboom's comment. Showing your body to public is a dream?? Nudity in an artistic way I think should be tolerated but nudity close to porn should not. The problem here in Malta is that we do not have harsh laws to punish people/businesses who sell adult material in general to underage youths. I do not agree that she has to pose naked as I think she has enough talent to make success through her music even if I am not a fan of hers. There is nothing wrong in people giving their opinion about this some may agree 100% some may not agree! At the end she is old enough to do what she thinks is right for her to do! One must remeber that she is a very public person and nearly everyone in Malta knows about her. So you don't expect people not to pass negative comments about you some may like you some may not like you! The reason why we never make it in Malta weather it is music or sports is because we never allow negative comments and always find excuses for our failures!!!

Are we celebrating the beginng of the year 2010 in few days time? or the beginning of the year 1010? Come on guys, leave people live their life. Ira is the BRIGHTEST star Malta has ever seen.. in all senses. She's super talented in singing, song-writing, she writes amazing blogs, has lots of hits (which has also been covered by foreign artists), supported great artists, published a dvd, book, and above all she's super hot... sizzling hot! So whats all this big deal just because she said that she MIGHT use what mother nature gave her??!?? Being a great fan of Ira (one of the many) i'm sure that if she decides to do it, the result will definetely be art and not explicit nudity photos. Go Ira, you rock.

@C. Zammit. What does Holland got to do with it? If Malta was half as liberal i agree with what you say 100% we would have less problems. I love the dutch. They're definitely chill and would not comment the way just because the word nudity was uttered by IRA LOSCO. Not to mention totally taken out of context. But in a way it shows how close minded we are. And yes i joked around in this manner :-) because a relative of mine literally saw hell to pursue her dream in Malta. This unfortunately included being told that at the age of 25 she should be thinking of 'More important things' like having kids and settling down as opposed to pursuing a professional Tennis Career. She is unfortunately suffering from depression now and not the same person anymore! A woman has it much harder- FACT! Ira whatever you do DO NOT STOP! You still have a lot to give . Merry xmas!

How many of your young girls in Holland have an abortion?? At least over here they do not kill their child like you do in Holland. Everyting is Normal in holland not only nudity scuicide , drugs , abortion all that is normal in the netherlands. We have a good night life in Malta as I am one who goes out regularly.Beleive me go to paceville and you can see for yourself that no one is either deprived or naive!! Hilarious @Charles Xuereb. You nailed it on the head. This is exactly what most MACHO conservative people expect women to do. And on the even more ridiculous side you also have the conservative women , or should we say the ones who think its not a good thing for a woman to feel good about the way she looks and flaunt it, to bring down other women who do so. The mirror is a good reflection of who we are but what's important is on the inside. Go Ira and keep it up. As a woman i think you're beautiful on the outside but even more beautiful on the inside. We need more of this. We are fed up of always being told how we should be because of a stereotype mentality.

@ Joe Xuereb - Your argument is very stupid. To start off with what's so wrong in someone getting married and having children. Do you have to make fun of that!!! Just because people have a different opinion it does not mean that they have no brains! If people are against the Gay community one has the right to be! No one said that we do not like successfull people in Malta. But people have the right to their own opinion. What talent is there in nudity! That shows how cheap a person can be! It does not have anything to do with Malta being catholic too! So please chill out your self Mr open minded!!!! Happy Christmas to you too!!

(In a deep serious voice ) Thou are a woman and therefore shall do as we say. Thou shall sing only and dare not express yourself in any other art form apart from singing. Thou shall also retire in your 20s and thou shall not utter the word nudity ever again. Thou shall give up your music as we do not like successful people in Malta .We prefer losers as it makes us feel better about ourselves. We want people who have no brains and we want to mock them as we please . In the meantime we shall use thou to the full for charity work , political songs or some awards ceremony. Thou are not allowed to earn money from your job and to enjoy your job. Expressing such joy in public would insinuate you are on drugs and must refrain from smiling. After all said and done thou shall be confined to get married, have babies and ridicule the gay community. This has to be done in this order as otherwise thou shall be excommunicated from the Catholic church. Chill out Malta and Merry Xmas to all ;-) HO HO HO

Patsy Palmer>, unfortunitly since we have been living on the islands, we find that most of the locals are either* deprived of sex or just plane naive*, even when my wife is sun bathing on the beach away from public roads(just to make it clear), we see many old male locals stopping and glarring as if they seen a ghost, she happens to be blond since we orignate from the Netherlands and backhome we are very liberal, so much so that sex education is taught at a very early age at schools and yet we have the LOWEST PREGNACY RATE OR STATISTICS IN THE WHOLE OF EUROPE. As for Malta well work it out for yourselves. Nudity in Holland is normal in the proper manner ofcourse and not in public, and let me remind you also that the majority of the Dutch are Christians Faith same as you and our morals are just a high as yours in Malta, so really its in the mind and not to be taken seriously as then physcologically thats when it tend to be nasty in people's mind and dangerous to the younger people. So what it boils down to is Educating & self respect.

Insinuating nudity as porn is completely out of context. First of all Ira Losco has never posed nude or published nude pics. Secondly i doubt she ever will. Having a tasteful shoot with the right angles covering the intimate parts is an art form and common practice right from the days of BLONDIE in the 70s. Whilst blatantly exposing the private parts is a complete different subject possibly considered soft porn. However in some ways i believe men get away with murder. I mean being a woman myself i feel very frustrated to see male artists with beer belies , bold and wrinkled getting away with just being artists in their old age. Whilst woman with a bit of cellulite, a pregnant belly, a few wrinkles or sagged breasts being butchered and being told to settle have a family and call it a day. I mean think about it how many female artists over 40 are there doing music successfully around the world compared to male artists? It is all about perception . Music has bee coupled with image since the 60s. The Beatles without their cropped haircut would not be the Beatles we know of.

I swept through some of the comments below and I have to admit in MALTA we have a BIG problem, thinking we are "hollier than thou". I don't think Its such a big BAD deal releasing a book with some amazing pics . Artists do it all the time abroad. Even in countries where export is very difficult such as the Baltic states etc. I have been managing IRA for the last 6 years- post Eurovision and I have never worked with a more human, down to earth artist than Ira in my career. There is NO boasting in this interview or insinuating she is more than others. We are more than satisfied with the humble achievements. This year we marked the 100th performance abroad . All that matters to me personally , is that the artist is happy and active. Going strong for 6 years is what matters!
There are artists who craft the Maltese language better than others and Ira spoke about this.
She always answers 'you never know' to Eurovision and to nudity because it is an honest answer BUT Actions speak louder than words and she's never looked down or offended anyone!

Why is it that whenever 'posing naked' is mentioned on this HOLY island the majority of the HOLIERS give me the 'slight impression' they only think porn?!! rather than Gauguin, Enjolras, Cezanne, Michelangelo, Klimt, Renoir, Durer, Lucien, Titian, Degas, Zorn, Delacroix, De Lempika, Rubens, Bouguereau, Vallotton,...need to go on?!
Having said this, however, I must admit she did ruin the whole thing by uttering the words '...I'm not holier than thou...', which unfortunately suggests that she was on the same brain waves of the HOLIERS!! :-(

I am 19 years old, i like nudism and girls but a role model who is willing to portray her body as a sex object for money and publicity is a disgrace to the female specie and society. something like this would go well with perverted men who can only satisfy themselves to naked pictures because they can't get a real women.
famous female artists such as Britney, Lindsay Lohan and Paris hilton are attention shanks and lady gaga following suit. there's nothing "modern and cool" with drugs, bisexuality and whorism. if you don't want to be judged and criticized then don't make yourself popular. the liberals are experts at making us feel guilty for not joining their brainwashed herd.

Since all the 'holier than thou' judges seem to be quoting Christianity...let me quote it back to ye all.....'Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you (Matthew 7:12)' Ira had the guts to be honest...but it seems that it doesn't go down too well with the supposedly 'non judgemental Christians' ..... pave on Ira.... all publicity is good publicity and these 'shocked' Christians are giving it to you FOR FREE....well done!

@Patsy Palmer - As if Ira is the only one performing abroad!. You don't know the number of Maltese bands performing abroad and doing well too. To start off with she is very far in reaching Mark Storace (Krokus) in sucsess abroad. Also we have lots of Metal / Rock bands who perform abroad regularly . We can start of by mentioning the band Slit (extreme metal band) who was featured in the Terrorizer magazine and also performed abroad and took part in one of the biggest metal festivals held in France( HellFest). If I start to mention there is a long list of bands Loathe , Forsaken , Nomadson and so on. For Maltese media this does not count and for many people too. I am not saying that she does not have a good voice but I think she is over rated by the media.

I think part of the fault that now a days youth are disrespectful is because the parents of yesterday where just not parent but dictators,I admire Ira for saying such things cos she not afraid of some tom dick and harry that might judge here we Maltese tend to judge others and forget our own faults in life pretending that we are innocent and decent people but guess what many on this island are just double face , and just like to hide there own things. Like for the issue of nude beaches we as a whole pretend that we don't like it when many Maltese alike travel every year to Italy to stay nude. Youths Now a days are just like that because lost the values our beloved grandmas used to pass to us and that has been lost in the Parents generation of today. Wake up Malta and live and let live.

The only thing Ira said and which all of you are bombarding her with, is that she said "I wouldn't say no because i don't know what i'm going to do tomorrow or next year" ... in life we all know that you must never say never and that's what Ira believes too ... as soon as all of you hear the word nudity apparently you automatically think of something which looks vulgar ... then people something must be wrong with all of you as some of the most beautiful photos that were ever published were nude photos! And anyway Ira just answered a question which this journalist asked her ... next time one of you should have answered instead! Apparently you have all forgotten or have no clue of all the good deeds Ira does all year round. What about you guys? Judging from behind a computer screen is very easy.Ira's music and all her products have taken local music to another level.Do you know that Ira is asked to perform abroad on a regular basis? So all of you stop judging Ira for what she says. Listen to her music and understand what talent this girl has!

@ Ricky G.Vella - First of all like all other Maltese living abroad you want to show us how bright and open minded you are! You say that Malta is only fit for old Maltese people & retired foreigners! you are mistaken. First of all just see the thousands of students who come to visit our Island in Summer. Most of them come here for the night life. We do have a good night life for your info. There are a lot of things & events going on around the Island. Maybe if you did not know there are also strip clubs in Malta too. So there is something for everyone. To be modern it does not mean that everyone does whatever he/she likes, there has to be some laws. If for you being a modern man mean's that everyone looses his/her values and does what ever he/she likes I pity you. I also pity 'modern men' who their only entertainment is always sex related(strip clubs , naked women , porn ect....... If you are a so called 'modern man' be of a good example to younger youths.. (for you info I am young myself. )

While certainly not condemning her honesty, is Ira so down on publicity and unwanted by the public that she had to have this publicity stunt?

You will not be the first, and you will not be the last.
If you got it, flaunt it. I am tired of looking at big Maltese girls, with their flab sticking out from between that three inch gap that is purposely situated between their trouser/skirt and their top. Not sexy at all.
I have gone pass my sell by date, otherwise I would. Normally, I have nothing on at home, just my radio.

All these negative comments below me, if i were her which obviously i'not as i wouldn't choose a public career, we know what its like people try to put you down any which way they can, however in her case being liberal and mind you there is nothing wrong in that we are living in a modern age and unfortunate although Malta is trying hard to be on the same lines as the rest of our partners, but with a ? mark, people need to get off that narrow pedistal of theirs down to ground zero with the rest of us europeans, however i think she'll do much better if she were to just leave the islands and look further afield, Malta is limited and its only fit for old people who are still living in the days of the ark and the retired foreingers who come here for the sun peace and quiet, at least in Gozo, Malta well thats another chapter. So what if she kissed another girl.or want to have some nudie pics, who is worried, its like a brand new car after a while nobody cares,as a modern man i say no big deal. Goodluck Girl

I think that people like Angelina Jolie, Jessica Alba, Charlize Theron, Megan Fox, Cameron Diaz & thousands of others are going to be worried as they might finish unemployed from now on. The Maltese superstar will take surely all the covers of the international press (like FHM,GQ,ESQUIRE,LOADED) & they are going to finish either on the Gwida or Antenna cover.
Let's use a phrase launched by a great Italian comedian : MA CE' FACCIA IL PIACERE !!!

Madonna is a huge artist. You are further embarassing yourself and demonstrating how you are commenting on stuff you shouldn't even dream of commenting about. You clearly have no clue about the world you live in. Maybe, you know a lot of history and are still in the 17th century, where your ideas would be applauded. Please move on with the world. If Ira poses nude, all healthy persons would enjoy watching the pictures. Some perverts would not like it, because THEY are perverts and go against their very nature.
It is high time we accept the human body as it is.

What I think is that this island should be a tad more broad minded. The girl is honest. She's always one of the faces i see when there's a charity somewhere on. Just because artists bare flesh, which to my knowledge she hasn't done so far, doesn't mean they are followers of satan. I admire her talent and her being real, at least we know we're getting the truth. Children and youngsters are constantly being exposed to violence and our politicians lies!!! hello anyone do you ever see the harm in that! Morals, morals......I wonder if any of you ripping her to bits below have any of your own...love thy neighbour as thy self????? don't think anyone is really practicing that here are they?

My oh my what a secular society! What is happening here? Why can't Ira follow her dreams, her wishes and her aspirations. Let her be. If she wants to do anything for music, art, photography etc let her. If you dont like it DONT WATCH. There are plenty of God channels on TV for you. Ira ignore this backward mentality. Your aura does us proud posing, singing, composing etc ... We like the rebel in you!

Didn't God create "man" in his (God's) own image? What is wrong about showing "God's image" to the public? Naked pictures are not porn my dear Christian brother. Porn goes beyond that. Porn is the projection of lewd acts and not simply naked modelling. If such work of art is not your cup of tea, you can always look the other way, switch channel, don't buy the magazine etc etc.
As far as can recall, Tiger Woods rose to fame because he is a top class golfer and not because of his personal life. If I remember correctly, his personal life seems to be the cause of his demise instead of having the effect that you are trying to portray.

I wish some people would get out of their caves and stop being so blatantly stupid. There is nothing wrong with nudity (well ok if you're extremely out of shape it may not be such a pretty sight). You people speak about religious morals and yet forget that according to your beliefs - God made us and everything around us and saw that all was good and guess what..... He made us naked!!!! I suggest to these people to start a petition to remove the thousands of nude paintings and statues in the Vatican that were paid for by people in exchange for a place in heaven (which the pope of the time duly obliged). So please find the time to educate yourselves and remember another thing that your religion tells you - thou shalt not judge!!!!

The inane, inate sillines I always suspected lurked beneath the surface of this girl pokes its head above water..........she would do well to reflect upon the fact that unless she achieves some name recognition beyound our shores she really is just a nobody in the profession she has chosen. Has nothing to do with morality, just plain business sense. As one established Maltese artist once noted, unless one packs the bags and leaves Malta, there is no chance of real success.... Or is this just a frustrated singer who never had the guts to leave mummy's nest talking, as her ambitions hit the confines of these shores? So what does she want to do about it - reject much of the positive glow she has managed to generate in her own little country, not an achievement to be scoffed at, while keeping only the superficial, transient support of a core of friends dating back to her school, dancing days and sustained by her chosen social circles? Plain silliness, yawn yawn yawn. So she kissed a girl and does not remember.....following a well trodden path there.....though this daring exploit apparently needs to be qualified by a bout of selective, unconvincing amnesia....

Dear Ms. Losco: I remember you from the time at the sixth form at St. Aloysius College. You had a sound upbringing, have had an excellent career and achieved much more than others have during a lifetime. Why lower yourself to such level? Why don't you keep your private life and your thoughts to yourself? Can't you stick to what is fit and proper in a 'civilised' society You can rest assured that this interview will do you more harm than good.

No one is holy accept God but we have the seed to be...be couragous and stand up and show your Christian Values....for sure eternal life is much more worthly than earthly fame...various examples...latest one Tiger Woods who seems understood this.
Ira, people loves you as you are but pls don't dissappoint people, especcialy your young fans who for sure deserves better than showing them your graces...there is enough porn around to disgust also God...no need another one.

Sending this time of message is not going to do her image any good at all just like the last eurovison singer, tend to bury their heads in the sand after a biggest maltese flop ever. So Ira please don't call us we 'll call you. When wanabees tend to get too big for their boots they also fall flat on their face quicker then lightening and this kind of nessage is best expressed in the UK where just about anything else goes and not in our little islands. Too many copy cats for the sake of a few bob.

I think her comments are a very very bad example to our young, just imagine my two 14 year old twins start in the wrong footing according to the message so as i understand it, i totally agree with P Caruna, there is no place for god almighty wanabees who like most in the us and the uk think they can change a nation. No but no thanks not for me or my family we have a morala code of practice and that is our christain upbringing, if this is what we expect in 2010 only God knows what we then expect in time yet to come.

Sadly, playing or at least pretending to be a naughty girl has become almost mandatory for aspiring/established pop divas.
And then people wonder from where youths get their odd behaviour....just look at their role models!
