It is always interesting to read about inscriptions and the one above the Main Guard has been making the headlines. Inscriptions may record the past, illustrate the present or forecast the future. A somewhat prophetic marble tablet is said to have been found during the recent excavations for the foundations of the opera house.

It is still being cleaned and interpreted - as Latin is a dead language - but I am told that it is something to this effect: Quod olim non fecerunt miseri Bergonzi, non faciant novi barbari in nomine Gonzi. (What once the wretched Bergonzi did not do, let not the modern Barbarians do in Gonzi's name.
