Ding Jinhui came through a nail-biting quarter-final clash with Ali Carter in the final frame in Telford on Wednesday night to set up a UK Championship last four date with Stephen Maguire.

Carter led three times in the final session but it was China's Ding who edged the match 9-8.

From 5-7 down, Ding made breaks of 72 and 86 to level only for Carter to knock in a 74 to move to within one of victory.

The Englishman did not manage another point with Ding taking frame 16 with a break of 95 then winning the decider 76-0.

Maguire eased through with a 9-5 win over qualifier Peter Lines.

The world no.2 was 6-2 up after the first session and looked set for a comfortable victory when he won the first frame of the final session.

But Lines, who had knocked Mark Williams out in the previous round, rallied with three frames in a row to close to 7-5.

Maguire, rolled in a century break of 108 in frame 13 and wrapped up victory at the first opportunity.

Other results: Higgins bt Liang 9-2; O'Sullivan bt Selby 9-3.
