The Auditor General’s report highlighting shortcomings in the public administration confirmed incompetence which the people had to pay for, Labour Party spokesman for finance Charles Mangion said.

He said in a statement that in his report the auditor noted several shortcomings which were repeated year after year in his report and these confirmed the need for an accrual accounting system as well as more accountability.

One shortcoming was that a number of ministeries and departments failed to send in details on uncollected government revenue.

Another was that Mepa did not pass on to the responsible ministry the drainage contribution it collected and as a result owed €2.7 million in arrears.
