The Authority for Transport in Malta will take over all functions and powers regulating land, sea and air transport on January 1, when the new Transport Authority Act comes into effect.

The authority would hold roles which to date belong to the Malta Transport Authority, the Malta Maritime Authority and the Civil Aviation Department.

The consolidation of these roles in one authority had the aim of creating synergies in the regulation of the sector and build an effective basis at all levels as well as opportunities for employees.

The new authority, which will be chaired by Mark Portelli, will have four supervisory committees which would focus on the authority’s principal activities.

The Maritime Affairs Committee would be chaired by Joe Degrabriele, that on aviation by Chris Grech, that on land transport by Simon Vella and that on lands and infrastructural projects by Jonathan Vella.

Each supervisory chairman would also be a member of the authority’s board of directors.

The other members are David Stellini, Louisa Bonello, Veronica Zammit Tabona, Helen Camilleri, Andrew Sacco and Chris Degiorgio.
