Social Policy Minister John Dalli on Wednesday gave details of the government's charges for operations and consultations on patients not entitled to free medical care.

A major complex (more than major) operation is charged at €6,405.78; a major operation, €2,329.37; intermediate, €1,048.22; minor operation under local anaesthesia, €256.23; and a minor operation under general anaesthesia €465.87. A consultation in the Emergency department sets the patient back by €46.59, or €34.94 at the Outpatients department.

Answering a parliamentary que-stion by Silvio Parnis (PL), Minister Dalli said the tariffs were being reviewed following the finalisation of a costing exercise at Mater Dei Hospital. They would soon be published in a legal notice.
