San Ġwann goalkeeper Jean Matthias Vella is approaching the end of a 10-day trial with English Conference National club Stevenage Borough.

Vella, 17, came through the youth ranks of San Ġwann and is a member of the U-19 national squad.

He has already taken part in several training sessions with Stevenage's senior squad and figured in a number of friendlies.

A statement from the Division One club said that Vella's performance in one of the matches he played for Stevenage caught the attention of scouts representing clubs in higher divisions in English football. These have requested meetings with the goalkeeper's agent and San Ġwann officials.

Vella is due to return to Malta this weekend to rejoin the Saints' squad ahead of Monday's Division One league match against St George's at the Tedesco Stadium.

Meanwhile, San Ġwann have announced that four UEFA qualified coaches will be conducting a training camp for the club's youth nursery during the first week of January. The training camp is open to children born between 1997 and 2002.

The international coaches for this youth training camp are Giuseppe Galluzzo and Antonio Pinto, both from Italy, and Timoslav Richter and Oldrich Januszka who are from the Czech Republic.

The San Ġwann nursery have also invited some Malta players to make a guest appearance at this training camp. More information may be obtained by sending an email to Christopher Sant, the San Ġwann nursery secretary, on canaries@nextgen.net.mt.
