Ħamrun Spartans and Tarxien Rainbows will be in search of valuable points when they face off in their final match of the first round this evening (kick-off 19.30).
Tarxien are seventh in the standings on nine points, three above the Spartans. The two teams will be keen to return to winning ways after both suffered a defeat in their last league outing.
The Rainbows let in two late goals in a heartbreaking 2-1 derby defeat against league champions Hibernians. For their part, Ħamrun produced a battling display against title favourites Valletta but went down 3-2 after cancelling out an early two-goal deficit.
Since then, the two Championship Pool hopefuls have received a pscyhological boost after both Ħamrun and Tarxien progressed to the quarter-finals of the National League 100 Anniversary Cup last weekend.
Tarxien brushed aside Division One side Balzan Youth 5-1 while Ħamrun were 4-1 winners over Division Two team Mellieħa.
Noel Coleiro, the Tarxien coach, is certain to be without Ryan Grech who is recovering from a long-term injury while Luke Vella Critien and David Camilleri are doubtful.
Johnny Debattista is back in the frame for the Spartans after recovering from a persistent back injury but Neville Galea is still sidelined with a knee problem.
