Enke: The German Football Association, the league and Bundesliga club Hanover 96 are setting up a foundation in name of the late Robert Enke and dedicated to the research and treatment of depression. Germany and Hanover goalkeeper Enke committed suicide by throwing himself in front of a train on Nov. 10 after suffering from depression for years.
Niang: Olympique Marseille captain Mamadou Niang will be sidelined for six weeks with a sprained right ankle. The striker sustained the injury in a clash with Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas during Marseille's 3-1 home Champions League defeat by Real Madrid on Tuesday.
Modric: Tottenham Hotspur's midfielder Luka Modric has stepped up his comeback from a broken fibula with a successful appearance in a training ground friendly. The 24-year-old began the season in inspired form for Spurs before picking up the injury against Birmingham City on Aug. 29. "I feel good. I didn't feel any pain and that's the most important thing," he said.

Horse racing: Japanese trailblazer Vodka will retire from horse racing after competing in the Dubai World Cup in March following a minor health scare. Vodka's trainer said the five-year-old mare would miss Japan's season-ending Arima Kinen on Dec. 27 to prepare for her spring swansong at the world's richest horse race. Japan's most popular horse suffered a nose bleed after becoming the first mare to win the Japan Cup recently.
Basketball: All Star center Dwight Howard celebrated his 24th birthday by scoring 25 points in the Orlando Magic's 97-86 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday. Howard, nicknamed "Superman" by fans, added 11 rebounds and seven blocked shots to set the pace as Orlando improved to 17-4 for their best start since the 1995-96 season.
