Acid attack victim did not recognise aggressor
No arrests made yet
A driver who was badly injured when a motorcyclist threw a corrosive liquid at him two days ago told the police he did not recognise his aggressor.
Francis Scerri, 59, of Nadur was questioned briefly shortly after he was admitted to hospital with extensive burns to his face, hands and feet in Transfiguration Avenue, Lija on Tuesday evening, sources said. The man was in such a weak state, he could not communicate well.
The sources said the type of the liquid used had not yet been identified and was still being examined by experts appointed by the court.
It is understood that Mr Scerri was waiting to meet a prospective car buyer when the liquid was thrown through the open window of the vehicle he was in.
Mr Scerri has undergone a number of medical interventions.
The sources said the police and court experts are combing the area for any evidence. Scene-of-crime officers were yesterday afternoon noticed examining a telephone booth at the entrance of Lija. A number of people have already been questioned. No one has been arrested.
Meanwhile, Magistrate Joseph Apap Bologna has launched an inquiry.
Inspector Kevin Farrugia, from the district police station, and Inspector Anthony Portelli, from the Criminal Investigation Department, are investigating.
