February deadline for exchange of Lm coins
Old Maltese lira, cent and mil coins, which ceased to be legal tender after January 31, 2008, will not be exchangeable after next February 1, the Central Bank said.
Until then, the coins can be exchanged only at the Central Bank of Malta Annexe, St James's Counterguard, Valletta, from Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
The Central Bank of Malta will continue to exchange Maltese lira banknotes until January 31, 2018.

@George Vella: Well, I totally agree it would be a great expense to travel down to Malta for each and every coin you need to change. I would suggest you consolidate all of you old Maltese change and bring it to Malta in one go. I can't believe that one would be unable to tie this into another long ferry voyage across to/from the sister island.

My advice to LM Buttigieg is to keep the coins.
In future they will have much more value ,as they will be all that will be left of the poor Merill hunted down by poachers, the fresh water crab il Qabru driven to extinction by development in Bahrija valley and the weasel which could not survive in the concrete jungle.

@ Frank Leigh & U. D'Amico.
I believe that you are both missing the point from L.M. Buttigieg. I think that what s/he is trying to say is that why should we Gozitans, have to go through the extra expense and hardship of coming over to Malta to change the old coins or the liri for that matter. Will we get a better rate of exchange? Once again, I reiterate, that we are considered as 2nd class citizens, except during election times.

What about in Gozo, do we as Gozitans have to travel especially to Malta for the final exchange.
