Drunk man violently resisted arrest, court told

Brandon Chase, 23 of St Paul's Bay, was today placed under probation for three years after he admitted to having sprained the wrist of a policewoman and resisted arrested while drunk.

Police Inspector Martin Sammut told the court that Mr Chase had gone to a staff party at a hotel and then went drinking at a bar in Paceville While he was drunk he tried to get a taxi but found himself in Swieqi.

The police received a call about a man lying on the pavement in Swieqi and they took him to the police station in St Julians, where they told him that once he was sober, he would be released.

On hearing this, he ran out of the station and up the road, The police ran after him and tried to arrest him. He resisted violently, but they restrained him and re-arrested him.

Legal Procurator Peter Paul Zammit, appearing for the accused, told the court that his client could not even remember being arrested.

Inspector Sammut said the accused was very sorry for his actions and had apologised to the police officers involved.

Magistrate Gabriella Vella, for whom this was the first arraignment, placed the accused under three years probation after considering that he had entered an early guilty plea and had no prior convictions.
