B. Munich oust Juventus

Draw enough for Milan as Ronaldo fires Real Madrid into last 16

Bayern Munich surged into the last 16 of the Champions League last night after goalkeeper Hans-Joerg Butt scored a penalty in a 4-1 win over Juventus.

Although Juve needed only a draw from the final Group A game to join leaders Bordeaux in the knock-out stages, Bayern were the brighter side from the start and destroyed their opponents.

In France, a Cristiano Ronaldo double earned Real Madrid their place in the next round and top spot in Group C with a clinical 3-1 win at Marseille.

Real, who have 13 points from six matches, will be joined in the next phase by Milan, who drew 1-1 at FC Zurich, while Marseille will play in the Europa League last 32.

David Trezeguet converted Claudio Marchisio's cross on 19 minutes to give Juve the lead. The Germans drew level on the half hour when Martin Caceres needlessly fouled Ivica Olic and keeper Butt surprisingly popped up to score the penalty.

Striker Olic then put Bayern ahead seven minutes into the second half after Gianluigi Buffon could only parry Daniel van Buyten's effort before Mario Gomez and Anatoliy Tymoshchuk rounded off the win.

Ronaldo fired a superb free-kick in the fifth minute and benefited from a defensive blunder to score his team's third with 10 minutes left on a cold, windy night at the Stade Velodrome.

Lucho Gonzalez, who missed a second-half penalty, had levelled in the 11th minute, only for Raul Albiol to give Real the edge on the hour.

In Zurich, Ronaldinho converted a second-half penalty to salvage a 1-1 draw for Milan after the rank outsiders had taken a shock lead. Milan finished with nine points from their six games and Zurich four.

Ronaldinho sent Johnny Leoni the wrong way in the 65th minute after Marco Borriello had been fouled by Alain Rochat, who was shown the red card.

Zurich, already eliminated but winners away to Milan earlier in the group stage, went ahead with Milan Gajic's free-kick after 29 minutes.

In Tel Aviv, Maccabi Haifa were knocked out without scoring a goal in Group A when they lost 1-0 to Bordeaux.

Bordeaux, fielding a second-string side, took the lead in the 13th minute when Brazilian Jussie scored from the edge of the area.

Try as they might to score the solitary goal that could have earned them a draw, the Haifa side lacked clear direction in attack and failed to mount a single credible assault on the Bordeaux goal.

The match also marked a farewell for veteran Haifa defender Alon Hazazi, who retired in his 720th appearance for the Israeli club.

CSKA through

A late goal from Yevgeny Aldonin earned CSKA Moscow a 2-1 win over Besiktas and a place in the first knock-out round of the Champions League.

Milos Krasic had put CSKA ahead in the 41st minute, firing in a shot from a narrow angle on the left to beat Besiktas keeper Rustu Recber.

Bobo volleyed in from close range to put the home side level in the 86th minute, but Aldonin snatched all three points for CSKA with a shot in the fifth minute of injury time.

The result put CSKA through as runners-up behind Manchester United in Group B, while Besiktas finished bottom on four points.

England striker Michael Owen scored a hat-trick for injury-hit United to beat Wolfsburg 3-1 and deny the Germans their first last 16 appearance in European competition.

Although a decent penalty claim was dismissed early in the first half, Wolfsburg only had themselves to blame for failing to take several excellent chances against United's makeshift defence before Owen nodded in a Nani cross on the stroke of half-time.

Bosnian striker Edin Dzeko levelled on 56 minutes with a bullet header from close range following a superb ball into the danger area by defender Marcel Schaefer, but Owen was on hand after 83 minutes to slot home at the far post and the striker sealed the win with a crafty finish in added time.

Wolfsburg's consolation is a Europa League last 32 knock-out stage place after finishing third in the group.

Atletico Madrid qualified for the Europa League despite turning in a toothless and erratic performance to lose 3-0 at home to Porto in Group D.

Bruno Alves leaped above the home defence to head Porto into the lead from a corner in only the second minute at the Calderon and Radamel Falcao made it two 12 minutes later when he rifled home the rebound from a long-range Fucile strike.

Atletico were desperately short of ideas going forward, particularly after key striker Sergio Aguero limped off just after the break, and when Hulk smashed in a third off the crossbar some disgruntled fans began heading for the exits.

Porto and Chelsea were already through to the Champions League knock-out stages and APOEL Nicosia needed a win in London to claim third place in the group and the lucrative Europa League spot but drew 2-2.

The Cypriots stunned Chelsea with a sixth minute goal from Marcin Zewlakow but the group leaders replied in the 19th when Michael Essien lashed in a swerving shot from 25 metres.

Essien hobbled off four minutes later but there was no stopping the Premier League leaders, who went 2-1 up through Didier Drogba in the 26th while temporarily down to 10 men before Frank Lampard came on as a substitute.

Chelsea, already assured of top spot in the group, eased off in the second half and allowed APOEL to come back into the game with an 87th minute goal from substitute Nenad Mirosavljevic.
