Valletta was a hive of activity today, with thousands going to the capital for Christmas shopping and to enjoy a varied programme of activities to mark the inauguration of Palace Square following its rehabilitation.

The highlight of the programme was a re-enactment of celebrations held following the naval battle of Lepanto which practically wiped out the Turkish Ottoman fleet in 1571. Elements from the Knights of St John had participated in that battle.

The re-enactment involved more than 100 people dressed in period costume. The spectacular and colourful parade started from City Gate and moved down Republic Street to the square.

Scouts and girl guides from the Central District held a parade in Valletta in the morning while concerts were later held at Palace Square by Sarsaza Percussion Ensemble and EnKore.

There will be more singing in the square later today, including a concert by the Animae Gospel Choir and guest singer Ivan Grech of the Winter Moods at 8.30 p.m.
