City Gate traffic impact study underway
A study into the impact on traffic of the City Gate project is being finalised, Infrastructure Minister Austin Gatt has said in reply to a Parliamentary question.
He said the impact study is being made by ADI Associates, Environmental Consultants.
The Renzo Piano plans, unveiled earlier this year, will see the removal of Pope Pius Street, which currently spans City Gate and takes traffic from Castille Place to Bakery Street and the surrounding area, thus necessitating a rethinking of Valletta's traffic arrangements.
The plans will also see the end of parking in Freedom Square and the Opera House site, since both will be built over.

@ A.D.I associates...............Do not waste time and public money, in trying to find a way to enter Valletta comfortable if Pope Pius street is going to be abolish. Do not forget the heavy deliveries lorries which enters Valletta every day. The only way in will be entering from Castille through South, or Ordinance streets. Both streets are in touch with the whole project. Please, scrape the idea to use the outskirts of Valletta as entering, because it won`t work. Do not even think of taking Carnival out of Valletta, after more than 500 years. The only solution is MAKE an open GATE at the CITY GATE, as it use to be.

Dear Mr Prime Minister, please spend the taxpayers money on fixing the terrible state of the roads. Leave historical icons alone, until such time there is a person who can really do justice to the Maltese heritage. I cried when I saw the model of what's to become of OUR Malta. I don't live in Malta, and have never voted in Malta so I have no alliance to any party, however I still feel part of Malta and its heritage. Please direct your energies into something more useful like having enough medicines available to those people who need them; not having to go to the chemist several times to finalise one prescription. I can give you many more suggestions to improve Malta and therefore keep you busy enough to not even think about doing more damage to OUR Malta.
Thank you Mr. Prime Minister.
Kind regards
Tony Borg (Australia)

You sound fundamentalist in support of your subjective views which seem to claim that you hold authority on what constitutes improvement.
But trying to read between the lines to get some clues on what you see as "improvement" I read that you write of fortified city. This is totally different to understanding that Valletta is a "fortified capital city" that is the fulcrum of Malta's administration. It is in this spirit that I think Renzo Piano's design is a masterpiece. It would be blasphemous had it been proposed for Mdina, Munster, Lucca, Volterra, Erice and many others.
Valletta needs this project to keep it a cut well above all other fortified cities.

Can anyone please show me a small model of the Sette Gugno monument? Oh wait a minute I guess Renzo Piano have no idea that this monument, which is part of our glorious history, was removed and maybe he didn't even knew about it??

Please no more pictures of Piano/Gonzi plans for our historic city. They make me cry. As for those who go jelly all over when they think about Piano's plans, and think that by having some sort of link with the gentleman we will be considered by other Europeans as having reached their standard, forget it . It's just a case of the emporer 's new clothes.

Why do ADI Associates have to conduct a virtual impact assessment? There is a much simpler way. Just block Pope Pius Street now for a week or more, and let us see what happens!

Welcome to Valletta, the FORTIFIED capital city of Malta as built by the Knights of St John, first VANDALIZED by a PN Government in the 1960's and VANDALIZED again by the duo of modern VANDALS GONZI-PIANO.
Welcome to Valletta, a fortified city without a GATE and with a breach in its walls, welcome to the modern vandalism of a Parliament on stilts as used by circus clowns, and welcome to the modern masterpiece of a theatre without a roof, all courtesy of the modern GONZI-PIANO VANDALS OF OUR capital city at the peoples expense.
Add to this the VANDALISM of the removal out of spite of the 7 June 1919 Monument to the fallen Mallef under the British Bayonets and Rifles because it was made by a Labour Government.
THREE VANDALISM ACTS BY ARROGANT PN ADMINISTRATIONS IN TWO DIFFERENT CENTURIES.

@Joe Micallef,
Joe, I have no problems whatsoever to move forward, I have done that countless times, however an intelligent person definetly will move forward only for the sake of improvement.
You say that few people have the courage to embrace change, what makes you certain about your affirmation? I voted to a different party in 2008, have experience in various lines of work, so I am quite accustomed to changes mate! What i can never tolerate is that a fortified city, which means is protected for historical reasons is going to have it's front gate removed.

Shouldn't this study have been done as part of the city non gate project? This is certainly not a very good example of good planning coming after the news that Renzo Piano's fee is still unknown. Even looking t the model one can easily get a claustrophobic feeling as one enters the city through the breach. The bridge is to be 7 meters wide which is a third of the present one. imagine the thousands of people who enter Valletta daily passing to and fro in that limited space. Conveniently the model shows about ten persons crossing.

Your knowledge of geology is impressive! surely you don't think sand is imported! you do! Land supplies sand and sea erosion takes it!

I understand your reluctance to move forward, however like many others, I am sure you will have a rethink when this project is completed. Few people have the courage to embrace change!

I know it's a wooden model... but are the ww2 pillboxes being kept? Just Curious.
Also please study the impact on pedestrians when the gate is removed.

The city gate Project -- it is adding insult to injury --- what CIty Gate ...... it is just a hole in Wall surrounding the city ... and what project the supposed theatre whaich just an insult to the intelligence the Maltese people... it is just irrisponsible spending of the public money to build a new parliament in a shape and structure not appropriate for Valletta. And having a parliament structure that does away with the way we concieve parliament in our culture ..... doing away with history just for being modern or irresponsible..............!!!!!!!!!

These plans are an abomination........i look at the old photos of city gate and the royal opera house and feel like crying when i see this mass of modern, bulky, so-called architecture mixed with the style of the Valletta buildings......first thing first the government should get rid of those horrid flats behind city gate and relocate them, and then build up the entire city gate and the surrounding buildings in their original state.....like they were in the 1930s before the jerries destroyed it and the pathetic post war socialism rebuilt it in the most (yes im gonna use the word again) abominable way........and Pope Pius street will stay as it is, there is no need of a gap in the bastions!!!!!.....oh yes, for the stupid carnival floats.

I consider the term City Gate Project a sad joke, how can it be called so when the project consists of removing the gate?

ADI consultants: arent these the same consultants that advised and misled Austin Gatt and the public about Ghadira beach?
Following Kenneth Pye's report the removal of the Ghadira coast road was shelved, despite ADI advocating the removal of this road to allow (imaginary) sand from the land to reach the beach - an utter invention since Dr Pye clearly indicated sea- level rise as the main cause of beach erosion.
More taxpayers' money wasted on those who dance to the politicians' tunes?

The early plans had earmarked St Mark Street as the main point of entry to Valletta for traffic. Clearly this is ludicrous as it is already the narrowest access point in the city without even a pavement on either side! It is already dangerous for the residents as it is.
