Thousands in President's charity run
The President's Charity Run - a run from San Anton Palace to the President's Palace in Valletta, was a spectacular success this morning, with almost 6,000 runners taking part. Officials said more than 4,000 registered up to yesterday and their number swelled this morning. They paid €10 each as a donation.
President Abela - who jogs regularly - led the run under glorious sunshine from his official residence in Attard through Hamrun, Blata l-Bajda and Floriana to Valletta.
A number of people opted to join the run at Sta Venera or at Floriana. Among those taking part were the Prime Minister, Parliamentary Secretary Joe Cassar and Opposition finance spokesman Charles Mangion.
Republic Street was packed with runners as they headed down towards the Palace, with the common feeling among participants afterwards being that this had been great fun.
President Abela said he hoped it would become an annual event.
The run - the first of its nature - raised funds for the Community Chest Fund, which the President heads. Organisers said participation was far in excess of what had been expected.
The event was sponsored by Banif Bank and also benefited from a €10,000 donation from the Good Causes Fund which was presented by the Prime Minister. A donation by the Labour Party was presented by Michelle Muscat.

A fantastic initiative and event, well done to all - except to the people who decided that roads along the route should be closed more than an hour before runners were due to pass. The race hadn't even started from San Anton when the road leading to Valletta from Pieta seafront was closed to traffic and all vehicles diverted up Sa Maison hill. It took me 45 minutes to get to work in Valletta from Msida.

Well done to H.E. President Dr Abela and his team
Excellent idea of combining sports and charity.
Before Malta had a President , now the Maltese have a President.
By definition; a gift is to give without expecting anything back.
This year's l- Istrina will be the true reflection of those who really want to help others

Isn't it that charitable to have consideration for others ?
On this island we can never move away from the Village Head man adolation the minute some one is in high office we either light a candle and adore or poison the air he breaths.
People in office are public Servants and the higher the office the bigger the Servitude.
Dr Fenech Adami, calls his role "inservi" but the village metali persists with adulations and no consideration for those that have no choice or disagree.
Running a charity walk , calling a 7 mile walk a marathon , into the major arteries of the congested traffic roads around the heart of this small economy should have been planned and consequences understood.
The president's initiative is great and like him, I hope it will continue every year. My suggestion is not to let it interfere with other peoples right to go to work and therefore an alternative route , from San Anton to Bahrija or Dingle or St. Pauls causing less chaos on roads utilised by 90% of populations.
Charity is nothing to do with money , it is to do with what people do for each other .

Fund-raising, solidarity, health issues, generosity all came to the front line yesterday during the President’s Fun Run. But above all sport reigned supreme. This was all possible thanks to the love H.E. President Abela has for sport. He was the person who revamped the beautiful game in Malta as president of the Malta Football Association. Far from being just a sports administrator, he is an avid runner able to take on the half-marathon. His influence has worked magic – a huge number of persons running, jogging and walking on our roads – unheard of just a few years back. However the dark side always tries to rear its head. This time it was in the form of Mr. I. Vella. Who for goodness’ sake told him that the roads are just for automobiles? Yesterday’s initiative by H.E. was loud and clear – our roads are for everyone to use, even if it means they’re closed for traffic for a number of hours. Later on in the evening, something very similar happened in Valletta. St.George’s Square was given back to the citizens. What a breadth of fresh air. Our people at the top are surely setting the trend.

A truly noble initiative which turned out into a huge success.
It is however a great pity that we still have to live with those who want to divide the nation in anything that comes around. It is indeed a geat pity that while walking down Republic Street (along with the President), we still have to live with hearing comments from on-lookers such as "HMM Gonzi l-President, mela Hu!!!" and "Gonzi. Gonzi jmexxi l-Malta"
What the h*ll did such comments had to do with yesterday's event?

I Vella has a point.
why should all those that need to work have to be held up. (not everyone can have a day off when they want it.
the president could have lead the charity run towards Ta Qali and onto Burmarrad where it would have been healthier and not affect the congestion around the towns all leading to Valletta.

Absolutely excellent event. Not only do events like this clearly show the best aspects of clear and sound solidarity which is such an integral part of our identity. Unfortunately, you do find the odd individual who not only demonstrated very bad taste and narrow mindedness.
In view of the such egoism and shallowness, there is a greater need to push forward to eradicate such mentality with such events and should be a national priority.
One of the most important things that was shown was that there persons that gave ( time and financial contributions) didn't need to be enticed to give back something to society by been lured with the hope of getting something material in return for their individualistic personal consumption.
I big round of applause for our President of the Republic of Malta and all the persons involved, for bringing back true and honest values to the Maltese society. A clear and present demonstration of what a person of hold such a honourable position should be doing.

Refgarding the traffic issue, all those who like me follow or had taken part in marathons abroad knows that big cities like New York and London are traffic free on the day of such events. So why all the fuss about closing a few raods for a couple of hours. Are we ever going to become civilized or what?

I tend always to see the good rather than the bad, and after reading the writtings here, wish to encourage you to contact the event organisers to see where you, myself and all others, can be of future much needed help in the forthcoming events, and not just by pledging welcomed donations alone.
I am sure that the time and effort required from numerous volunteers in order to organise such a successful event would make the time spent awaiting in ones car, seem like a drop in the ocean.
Needless to say, please accept my warmest seasonal greetings to you as all mankind, especially the lesser fortunate.

This was a great initiative and a healthy one to boot! I for one really enjoyed the run - as opposed to running on my own it was great to be surrounded by so many like-minded individuals in a non-competitive environment. The only thing that could have been done better is having the people walking grouped to one side of the road - because they became a hazard to the runners in St. Anne Street.
Mr. Vella - maybe you should have gotten off of your behind and out of your car and walked like 5,000 of your fellow islanders! Also some basic comprehension would have helped as this event was all over the local media recently! Oh by the way ... maybe you missed this line in your bible: "As you have done it to these, the least of my brethren, you have done it unto me" (Matthew 25:40)

It was a great initiative - and all went well except for the er retarded start - so that a fellow politician runner - joined the front row!, to the cheer of all the runners who were getting impatient to start! The cheering was fantastic by all those people all along the way! from the start to the finish! Perhaps more Maltese people will start running or walking for their own personal benefit after today??? I've been stuck in traffic many times because of some race or other - but i will bow my head to sport. i find sports can unite us all! As to the comment why the journalist asked the questions in english - well i suppose its about time that people realise that we have two official languages and that there is nothing unpatriotic in speaking english.i am glad i can communicate in both maltese and english and also other languages. The swim after the run as part of the Commonwealth 2010 Baton was also fun, except for the unannounced jellyfish! Hoorah to all people who love sport!

@ I Vella,
I am really not surprise at the reaction & attitude towards the charity run event by a man that constantly needs to refer to a book to reply back to criticism. It's too bad that you got stuck in traffic but I can assure you that you are not alone, the cherry on the cake however was the fact that the organisers came to ask you for a donation and in return you are trying to persuade people not to offer money for Istrina.
Dear Mr. Vella are you just too attached to your moneys just like uncle Ebenezeer Scrooge? Or you just use & refer to your beloved book the way you please? You could have easily donated money, I don't think there were 100 people watching so I guess it would have been pretty humble and according to your instructions manual.
Personally this year will be the first year to donate to Istrina because for the first time it will not be organized like a major gambling event but a humble charity event that will involve the work of a lot of people from all walks of life including politicians! So prosit!

When I see the video of so many real athletes running with his Excellency The President Of Malta, I really feel sorry for not being able to add to your wait in the traffic by taking part in the event it is people like you who contribute to malta being a third world country by not being informed re such events through widespread media coverage that such an event had and by being intellegent enough to use alternative routes. Btw if all the poor had to be invited to the parties organised by the president than that will add to your traffic woes so better watch what you ask for!!!

Your half an hour stuck in traffic is definitely nothing compared to the thousands whose lifes are 'stuck' due to no fault of their own. That is partly why this event was organised. It is people like you who are an insult to our nation. You should have participated just like the few thousand who did and who donated. Enough said, continue living in your own misery and once you're at it why don't you organise a run and call who ever you want from which ever corner of the world you want.
It was a great event this morning. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I have never seen so many runners united for a common good cause. I look forward to viewing the video / pics taken from the helicopter.
A group of us then continued by swimming in Marsamxetto Harbour as part of the Commonwealth Games.

It was very sat5isfying reading the comments on this supreme occasion, untill one comes to the Comment by I. Vella, who urged the people to bycott l-Istrina by not giveing any donations.
This reminded me of a similar letter not to g ive blood unless it goes to the Maltese!
These two comments confirm that we still have people who can go so LOW that they even think of urging others not to help the needy, whether this is blood , financial aid or in any other form.
On the other hand it confirms also that these two examples are the minute miniority amongst a Nation whose population is known for its committment to help others.
As a Mlatese citizen I want to thank OUR President and all his team, as well as all those who attended this mornings event, including polititans from both major parties, and to those who will be giving their donation for l-Istrina to assist those in need.

This proves that the Maltese don't donate money/ do something for charity only if they are awarded with material things. All of the people who showed up were all awarded though - the feeling of doing something for others who need help is great!
Well done everyone and the President!

First of all well done to the President and all the participants. Realy a breath of fresh air finally.
Secondly to MR I Vella, I would like to konow if he was on Mars in the past two weeks. All the media was stressing not to go close to the activity with private cars.
Im also shocked by Mr or Mrs Vella suggesting people not to give donations. Amazing, dared also to quote from the bible.

This morning I spent half an hour in traffic waiting for the charity run to finish, all roads closed and no signs at all to signal that roads leading to major arteries were blocked. To add insult to injury one of the organisers came asking for money whilst I was in my car waiting for these so-called athletes to clear the road. Are we living in a third world country? This year I will not be giving any money to l-istrina and I urge everyone to do the same and if someone wants to do charity should do so without any publicity.
The bible states that:
when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind - Luke 14:13
does the president invite the poor and the lame to all the parties he organises?
