Meusac's role is related to EU, not CoE

I refer to the comments in Roamer's column (November 29) on the need to provide more information on the activities of our MEPs and on the European Parliament's business in general, as well as that of the delegates to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (CoE).

Although Meusac provides information on the activities of all EU institutions, the European Commission and the EP each have a representative office in Malta with the specific task of providing information to the Maltese public on the activities of these two major institutions.

Meusac, on the other hand, provides a mechanism through which the government consults with political parties, social partners and civil society on EU policies and legislative proposals in formulating Malta's position within the EU Council of Ministers.

Therefore, in providing information to the public and to interested stakeholders, Meusac seeks to present the perspective of the European Council and of the Council of Ministers.

Notwithstanding this, Meusac works very closely with the EC and EP representative offices, particularly in the context of a delegation agreement whereby Meusac is implementing a joint communication plan agreed to by the Maltese government, the EC and the EP.

Moreover, as has been pointed out on numerous occasions, there is a clear distinction between the EU and its institutions on one hand, and the CoE and its institutions on the other. Meusac's role is clearly related to the EU and not to the CoE.
