The police said today they had made a further four arrests after a woman was found taking drugs into the prisons yesterday. The woman, who was charged in court this afternoon, was allegedly carrying heroin, cannabis grass and resin and psychopathic drugs intended for delivery in prison. (see court report)

The other persons arrested in connection with the case were a 39-year-old woman from Hamrun, a 37-year-old man from Pieta and two men who are currently in prison, aged 34 and 41.

In other cases, the police said the Drug Squad arrested a 37-year-old man from Gzira following a search at his residence on Tuesday during which cocaine and cannabis grass and resin, as well as other items related to trafficking, were seized.

He is expected to be arraigned soon.

The police also acted on a European arrest mandate and arrested a Briton who is being sought by the British police for drug trafficking. Procedures for his extradition to the UK are expected to start soon.
