Every child in Malta should receive a whole education, to an extent that it became an integral part of Maltese life, and be made to discover the beauty of learning, philosophy student David Schembri said at a graduation ceremony yesterday.

He suggested that the University should allow students of the arts to take their own direction with their studies as was done in the US with programmes in which students had opportunities to attend lectures for different subjects and decide for themselves which direction their studies take.

"Such a modular model of study could be a blessing for our country, especially in times when intellectual versatility and individual ability are needed more and more. I believe we are at a period where arts courses need to be reviewed and their levels elevated so as to give them the esteem they deserve along with science and technology," he added.

He said that although he appreciated that the recently-introduced DegreePlus programme - which gives students credits for activities that are not part of the formal curriculum - was a step in the right direction, the fact remained that, for many students, the University was just a place where notes were transferred from lecturers' mouths to their notepapers. "I don't know what the ideal University is like but I'm pretty sure it isn't like this!"
