Karm Cassar's letter (November 25) raises a relevant point regarding the seriousness of electricity theft. In the past few years Enemalta has been successful in reducing electricity theft through several targeted initiatives. Enemalta has set ambitious targets for reducing electricity theft, and intends to meet them by installing smart meters throughout the whole island by 2012.

The new smart meter has several additional protection layers over and above current electronic meters which will permit the Utilities to meet such targets. The Utilities also intend to increase awareness on electricity theft through the various media in the country.

Customers should be informed about the dangers to our citizens, as well as the financial implication this has to our country.

We encourage anyone who knows or suspects of such occurrence to report immediately by calling on 2298 0777 or report through Enemalta's website, www.enemalta.com.mt.
