Blasphemy in article
Sexual content apart, do those criticising the censorship of the Alex Vella Gera article in the University's October 2009 Ir-Realtà consider the blasphemy contained therein as acceptable?

Blasphemy, as long as it's not insulting, becomes criticism. and criticism is acceptable. if u wish to remove freedom fo speech, if u wish to give religion a free ticket out of criticism, join the muslims who are trying to achieve that in America.
I will be soon filing a protest, claiming that nobody is allowed to criticise my favourite football club, because it was written down on some old tablet that only I got to see!

@ Robert Attard.
You said it. It does sound silly. There is nothing worth hearing in blaspheny. You will be a better person if you just take a walk to calm you down!

@Adrian Aquilina: A rose is a rose by any other name. Censorship is everywhere, we just call it by another appellation. Aren't civil laws a form of censorship too? Are they meant to restrict our "freedom of expression"? If a couple want to fornicate in public, are we censoring them if we enact a law which forbids them to do so? Anything that goes public has to have some scrutinising body to govern it. Otherwise we will all end up.....yes, you guessed it.....Sodom and Gomorrah!

maria sacco, ratings on films are not censorship they are a guide.children of 5 are not going to get porn..they cant buy it..censorship for adults with adult material is wrong..there should be no censorship just guides to what is inside or in the film and an appropriate age..

@Joseph Cauchi
I know that this might sound abit silly but sometimes abit of blasphemy calms me down. It helps me take out that extra steam. I become more controllable. Not to mention the fact that most people around me are not offended (or don't care) so its not really doing anything harmful. Quite a victimless crime I think! Surely not everything related to blasphemy is wrong?

"censorship is the biggest blasphemy of all." OK then, by the same yardstick, we can start to expose kids from 5years old upwards to hard porn. Is that what you mean?

Yes, I do.
Does anyone really expect the kind of person described in the story in question to speak in a genteel manner, with eloquent and poetic words, or is such a person more likely to use coarse language interspersed with blasphemy?
If a story (or play, etc) seeks to represent reality then it must do so as realistically as possible, warts and all.

Joe: Its a question of editorship not censhorhip. I'm not calling the police on the Times (unlike the censors). I'm not saying that it should be illegal to print such letters (unlike the censors). This letter does not insult my morals, it insults my intelligence. I'm just saying that you don't just print any drivel on a newspaper that wants to keep a certain standard. If I write a vacuous letter to the Times I don't expect it to be printed. The Times have all the right to print it of course but I have all the right to speak my mind about the decision to print it. See the difference between censorship and editorship?

Blasphemy like beauty is in the eye (or ear) of the beholder and everything is relative. After all "one man's food is another man's poison" and what offends one probably leaves another utterly indifferent.

“Blasphemy” is WRONG!
“Blasphemy” is condemned by God, as per the Second Commandment: “You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not acquit anyone who misuses His Name”.
This commandment prohibits not just swearing but also the misappropriation of religious language in order to commit a crime, participating in occult practices, and blaspheming against places or people that are holy to God.

@ Ms Maria D. Sacco
Do not assume that what is "serju" to you is necessarily "serju" to other people. In my opinion, censorship is the biggdest blasphemy of all.
@ Mr Alan Vella.
Do not fall intoi the error of fighting wrong with wrong. Just as it was wrong to censor the Realtà story, so it is equally wrong to call for censorship of "such letters".

So Mr Ablea, would you have us be like Khomeini's Iran which condemned the blasphemy of Rusdie's "The Satanic verses" or will you stand up for right of free speech and artistic expression ?

Why does the Times bother to print such letters? I am more offended by the printing of this letter then by any other blasphemy.
