A police constable had his leg amputated days after being involved in a freak accident while answering an emergency call. The officer was running to the scene of a public order incident at Southampton Magistrates' Court but tripped and suffered a severe leg injury.

The unnamed man, in his 20s and from Southampton, was taken to hospital, but his leg became infected in the days afterwards and surgeons had to operate.
