'No relation between Dubai World, SmartCity Malta and Go' - Gatt
Dubai World is the property of the government of Dubai, while Dubai Investment, ultimate owner of SmartCity Malta, is the personal property of the Sheikh of Dubai. There is therefore "absolutely no relation" between the two or with Go plc, Infrastructure Minister Austin Gatt told Parliament yesterday in reply to a supplementary question by Opposition Leader Joseph Muscat following the financial debacle over the weekend.
The recent events were therefore totally and officially separate, Minister Gatt continued.
Dubai Investment was probably unique in that it had invested US$30 million out of its own resources for SmartCity Malta just in the first year.
The project was right on target, with the first phase due to culminate by July 2010 with the delivery of between 10,000 and 12,000 square feet of furnished offices. The iron structure was complete and the pre-cast ceiling was ready. That commitment was being kept without any perceived problems.
At the end of this summer, applications were being submitted for the second phase according to plan, and permits were expected to be issued in the next few weeks. The relevant tenders had been issued and adjudicated to Maltese contractors, so there was no reason to doubt progress, said Minister Gatt.
He said he was meeting the project's Chief Executive Officer regularly every time the latter visited Malta.
The greatest problem, said Dr Gatt, was attracting foreign companies to invest in offices and new structures in the Mediterranean in view of the global economic situation.
Dr Muscat said he was noting the minister's answer, adding that his question had been shorn of any political innuendo.

It seems that it is now becoming a habit of the LP and its flock to ask parliamentary questions and when an answer is given, they raise doubts and do not believe what they are told. A glaring example, even outside parliament, was yesterday's reaction by Dr.Muscat after he met with BWSA high representative. This is a very nasty tactic as it tends to destabilize all that is said and done. At the same time they are cheeky enough to cry foul when they are simply ignored.

Hey Malta, you can kiss goodbye the SmartCity. Another pie in the sky blows up in the face of the Gonzi team! From the start this scheme was build on the false pretense that real estate will always go up, but not on the full potential of Maltese expertise in IT? I wonder what the fall out is going to be when construction comes to a stand still? Yeah sure the recession has come to Malta yet. Just wait and see.

June 2010 is not exactly what I would call right on target, isn't it?

"Dr Muscat said he was noting the minister's answer, adding that his question had been shorn of any political innuendo".
'Shorn of any political innuendo'? Yes and I am King George!
How can Joseph be credible when he and his party continue to negatively speculate and sow doubts about SmartCity? This is another mega-project the Labour Party has never dreamed of, let alone deliver. The project may be delayed due to the unforeseen recession, but ultimately it will deliver what it promised.

Has Minister Gatt met the CEO since the financial debacle? Or at least talked to him in some way or other? Then ,if not,how does he know that Smart City will not be affected.?

I do remember Claudio Grech saying that the recession was the biggest opportunity for Smart City not longer than 10 months ago. How come everything has changed now?

Is this the Times' level of professional journalism? Is it possible for them not to know that the government of Dubai and the Sheikh of Dubai are one and the same?
This is turning to be a not-too-smart office block rather than a smart city ! And it is being complemented by statements by a not-so-smart government too.

I agree it would be foolish to think this project will go ahead. Dubai is in financial free fall and was always going to be a shinning example to the madness of irrational exuberance of 21st century greed and speculation, whats more the oil has gone and is falling in UAE. Dubai is one big shiny ponzi.
Malta would do better to start thinking about and investing in projects to make Malta as efficient in feeding it's population and Water projects than speculative property Resorts which will become relic to what man wasted precious depleting land and resources on.

I think it would be very naive if we Maltese believe what the minister has to say. Of course the Dubai financial situation has a big impact on Smart City. Business are always connected and the average Maltese is smart enough to realize that "YES" Dubai does have an impact on Smart city. Whether the minister wants to live in his own dreams is another story, but the Maltese will not be easily fooled.
