Most recovering drug patients had been taking heroin
A huge majority of people being treated at the Substance Misuse Outpatients Unit this year (the former Detox) are recovering from heroin.
Information given in Parliament shows that of 853 patients in September, 789 sought treatment for heroin abuse, nine had been taking cannabis and 10 had been on cocaine.
There were one each on amphetamine and ecstasy and 43 cases were not specified.
The age of the patients ranged from 15 to 64.
715 were men and 138 were women.

I couldn't agree more with the commenters. However, we walk a fine line between media hype and helping those individuals who are indeed suffering from heroin addiction. I would hate to see someone slip deeper into addiction because their condition was not deemed serious enough by those in the community.

Apart from heroin here in Malta we have a HUGE cocaine abuse problem which the authorities are either oblivious to or are ignoring, one thing is for sure, burying our heads in the sand will only allow this problem to get even worse.

Very well said Mr Fenech!!!
And I wonder how there are actual patients for marijuana use. Could be the same thing as in USA were most of the re habilitation patients are there because of marijuana.....BUT....not because they are addicted to it....but because they were caught using it and they had to make a choice.....either go in rehabilitation or else go to prison. The choice is obvious!
Money is spent on petty crimes while the big fish gets away. Taxpayer money is spent on cases such as the one which happened last week of which we have the detailed story in the comments by the accused.

Unfortunately, it seems like more time, effort, and money are wasted on people using harmless marijuana instead of this horrible destructive drug.
I still cannot understand how free syringes are just handed out with no questions being asked. There is a very serious heroin problem in Malta that is not really being addressed. 15 year old children should not be on heroin as much as they shouldn't be smoking, drinking, or doing anything else that will harm them to this extent.
I really think that with all the scaremongering against these substances, instead of actual unbiased education about their effects, the situation is only getting worse.
Having said that, with recent light on people in the police force selling these drugs, its easy to see why they are still on the street, and the dealers are happily making money on these helpless kids.
Malta is a tiny island, where no one can deny that everyone knows everyone else's ins and outs, so the names of the people dealing these drugs are easily available. Someone to actually have the guts to bring them down is obviously a completely different story.
