Jailed for six months over escape bid
An illegal immigrant was yesterday jailed for six months after he admitted to trying to leave the island with false travel documents on Saturday.
Frederick Ofassu, 28, was caught with a false Italian passport, permanent Italian residence card and Italian identity card by the immigration officers stationed at the Catamaran dock in Valletta. Police Inspector Geoffrey Azzopardi told the court the accused had said he wanted to reach Italy to join his wife.

Jailed for six months. What a waste of time for the illegal immigrant! What a waste of money for Malta! Send him back to his own country immediately.

Is he going to be expelled back to Ghana when he serves his sentence?

Although at first glance this policy seems to be counterproductive, in the sense that if we let these illegal immigrants go, we are rid of them, it is in fact sound.
The message sent out is that Malta cannot be used as a stepping stone to travel illegally to Europe. Every effort should be made to repatriate this gentleman, who I believe hails from Ghana, a safe and democratic country. His wife can then join him back home.
